Is this dead?

I think it is but I will double check. Last year this used to be a pink Japanese anemone but it looks dead now. Should I just dig it out?

Are you sure it’s dead? They are pretty bomb proof, and might start sprouting soon, so I would wait a bit first.

I'm wondering if I should dig out and add to a container so I can keep an eye on it. It's not in an ideal location.

I’d be surprised if it’s dead, but I suppose it could be. Sounds kind you want it moved so popping it in a container and keeping an eye sounds like a good plan

I find Japanese Anemones a bit slow to get going in spring so would give it the benefit of the doubt for a bit.

Yep. Too early to tell. Anything left above ground from last year will look dead. Give it until at least May to see if new foliage forms around the base.

They die right back down to ground level in winter, and take their time to get going again in spring. I'd wait another month and then see if there's any new growth coming at the base.
