How do I stop grass from growing into my flower beds?

Tried wood edging and then deep ditches. It still gets in.

Is that metal flexi edging you see any good?

You have to weed it out.

SallyWD · 30/03/2025 08:51

I just pull it or dig it out. It's annoying but you have to keep doing it.

BeaAndBen · 30/03/2025 08:52

Yes, sadly it’s just weeding. No easy way.

Pepsipepsi · 30/03/2025 08:53

Yellow rattle plants feeds off grass but only to some extent. Make sure you'd don't have any bird feeders near your beds because the fallen seeds that the birds don't want will add to your grass and weeds problem.

But insta gardens don’t seem to have the problem, one I follow even says she does zero weeding because she mulches!!!!

If you mulch around everything grass does die off quite easily if it's not getting any light IME. But probably the insta people are making it look like they do nothing and have the perfect garden when really they (or someone else) are out there scrabbling around to make it look good for the photo. If I mulch I get ivy happily growing under and through it so for me it's not a solution. Things like docks with a deep taproot will just push on through and have to be dug out.

I find the best thing is to remove all weeds and then crowd the flowers in so there's no room for the weeds. I still get some but definitely less than in gappy borders.

ohnowwhatcanitbe · 30/03/2025 10:15

There are different types of grass and some of them spread by underground runners. That's probably what you've got.

So use mulch then?

If you plant densely you don't have to weed, we never do and we have a big borders.

If you believe that I have some prime real estate in Florida to sell you…

(she’s talking out of her ass - mulching can help a lot but weeds still grow)

Geneticsbunny · 30/03/2025 10:32

Only some types of grass, run into the borders. Most don't.

I dont have a lawn. I have a thick layer of bark and the grass seed can still take root (thank you neighbours) as it needs very little soil to start growing (the bark breaks down over time too providing a growing medium.... The more I've weeded out the less I get but there's always a bit.

Weeds are always with us, like death and taxes ☹️

You know that what's on insta is rarely an accurate representation of reality don't you?

Judy get an edging tool go round your beds a couple of times a year and straighten the edges.

And laundry. Weeds and laundry can both naff off.

Keeponkeepigon · 30/03/2025 12:24

I mulch my beds with wood chippings and have metal edging - ever edge. I don’t have any issues with grass. Also it helps if you slope your beds up from the grass too.

AlwaysGardening · 30/03/2025 14:20

Make sure there is a clear edge between your lawn and the borders. Recut with a half moon tool and cut the edges with edging shears every time the grass it cut and pick up the clippings. Mulching borders is a good idea as it does suppress weeds, but seeds will still blow in and need weeding out. They will be easy to pull out. If the grass has creeping tough white roots, it sounds like you have couch grass (Elymus repens). You will need to systematically weed out all the roots. If it's coming from the lawn, you'll need to tackle that too.

I get a lot of couch grass, and I'm happy to give the plant more method a try!

I'll get some more lavender plants once I've dug out the weeds and grass.
