Any ideas at roughly how much this garden would cost?

Hi there,

Looking for some help with a house purchase - the garden is in need of some TLC!!! I'm low on budget and discovering sorting a garden is an expensive job!

So all I wanted really was to turf the majority of the garden (leaving a little bit of paving slabs remaining), nothing fancy - just some nice grass. Unfortunately due to mobility issues I wouldn't be able to do any of this myself and appreciate its a mess and will all need leveling out etc. Would anyone be kind enough to offer (even very roughly) how much they think this might cost me to get someone to do it (Midlands based if that helps)?

Also, the fencing is rotten down one side too so that would also all need replacing, fencing also seems very expensive, again, someone I wouldn't be able to do & don't know people in the area to assist. Does anyone have a ball park idea of how much people are charging for fencing & installation also?

I think I underestimated the cost involved!

Thank you in advance for any help!

It cost us £1200 to replace the fence on one side of our garden and that was buying the panels ourselves and a handyman/gardener next door uses regularly and we use occasionally, doing it, proper fencing companies were much more expensive. To take up slabs and turf £20-£25 ph plus the turf which around here is £4.99 a metre ,I'd probably say £2k plus but I'm not in the Midlands. It doesn't look massively unlevel.

Thank you for your response. Thats made me feel a little better. I'd been reading of people spending 15k on a garden and went into a panic!

It depends what you want, I'm thinking of a local handyman type doing some fencing and basic turfing, if you want new patio laid, beds etc any established planting or landscaping it'll be a lot more

Just looking at very basic turfing. Nothing fancy....just some green grass!

It also depends on what's under the slabs. If there a lot of cement and rubble to be removed that costs quite a bit as the company will have to pay to take it to the tip. They'd then need to put down soil to replace what is removed before they can lay grass. Fencing with concrete posts and gravel boards is more expensive but worth it in the long run - our fence on one side was replaced 15 years ago and is still in excellent condition thanks to the panels being raised by the gravel boards and not sitting on soil (clay here). I'd budget £5k for fencing and returfing but it could be a bit more or a bit less - get 3 quotes!

Depending on the fencing you want and the quality of turf I would say £3-6k easy. I am midlands based and fencing gas shot up a ridiculous amount lately.

I had mine quoted pre covid at £2k for 30 panel. 3 months post covid and it was £5k.

I’m in the Midlands and I don’t think it would cost that much. I had some landscapers 2 months ago and they charged me £20.00 ph each. Fence panels are quite cheap and so is turf. I think if you put that job on the website that matches jobs to tradesmen( I’ve forgotten it’s name!) it would be less than £3000. The panels may not need to be replaced. If you can’t afford it all at once, just get the slabs pressure washed and the lawn aerated and reseeded.

Hi I feel for you ! Garden services can be expensive.
We had our 30 ft garden fenced on 2 sides in 2017 and that cost £1000, but it has concrete posts and a solid base that you slot the wooden panels into.
It has been worth every penny as we live at the top of a steep hill and it can be very windy.
We had to replace the cheaper ones nearly every year.I used to dread the sight if broken fence panels.
Good luck 🙂

PiggyPigalle · 01/06/2025 11:05

I would make the rotten fence a priority, check first that it's your responsibility. If a part rotten fence brings it all down in high winds, it will be even more costly. Also have it done before planting borders, or the plants will be ruined.

Get a reputable local company if not doing it yourself. Fencing is akin to driveways, they can do a rubbish job and scarper if only on facebook.
