Heavily scented shrub or tree

I'm after suggestions for a tree/ shrub that grows to (or i can keep pruned to) a height of around 6 or 7 foot.

It'll be up against an east facing boundary fence and in clay soil.

I'd prefer it to be summer flowering with the flowers to be strongly scented (to try and mask the smell of dog coming from the neighbours kennels on the other side of the fence).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Can you report the kennel to the council? Even if they have permission it cannot be allowed to cause health hazard!

We have some jasmine that does very well in east facing clay. It's especially strongly scented in the evening.

I second philadelphus aka mock orange. It smells divine!
Now (March) is an ideal time to plant. It may not be too keen on your clay but if it doesn't get too wet then you may be OK.

Lilac flowers for 2 weeks of the year max and my Philadelphus only flowers in May. You could try combining two or more? Honeysuckle grows well through other plants and likes its roots in shade. Also I'd try under planting with night scented stock.
