Clematis and other flowering plants for the house Façade

I've been looking to get a clematis for the façade of my home,as I love the way it looks
How does the plant look when it isn't flowering? Should I team it up with other plants like maybe roses?
For context my door faces the east/southeast and gets morning sun.

Clematis and roses go very well together, they are good companion plants.

Most clematis (except the winter flowering ones) look completely dead in winter, but come Spring the dead twigs come back to life as new growth emerges.

There is an exception: clematis armandii is evergreen.

Clematis can be slow to establish. I’ve bought a few 9cm pots from the supermarket and from nurseries over the years, and they’ve all needed a few years to get going. If you are not patient, consider getting one that is already a few years old.

If you are looking for an evergreen climber, star jasmine is another good choice. Although the flowers are not as showy as clematis, they have a lovely scent.

If you buy a clematis, make sure you note what type it is, as different ones have completely different pruning schedules.

Clematis are beautiful but I have gone right off them as they so often seem to get clematis wilt.
I would suggest jasmine with a good climbing rose.

Thanks for the suggestion, I love those fragrant jasmine flowers! I've picked a star jasmine and a clematis to go together, for starters. Good tip re the pruning. I had clematis last year but i think it's died after some of the windy days we've had...i don't think I paid attention to when I was supposed to prune them so I will do that this time...😅

Passiflora is another good choice, it is very quick to establish - a 9cm pot can be 8m at the end of the first summer. But it is not evergreen.

I’ve made the same mistake 😂! as a result I didn’t prune it this winter, so that will probably set it back another year…
