Climbing or rambling roses ?

Hi
I have this arch in my back garden. Gets sun most of the day. Not sure whether climbing or rambling roses would look best growing over it ? Or how many I would need ?
I’m looking at David Austin and imagining beautiful results but I am a newbie gardener !

I’d go for a climber. Most ramblers only flower once although spectacular when they do. They also put up lots of growth from the base and then need pruning afterbflowering. Tricky to extract growth from all the trellis will be a pain. You only need one rose each side.

@AlwaysGardening thanks that’s good to know. I’m going to get a James Galway rose for each side I think. Was also wondering if I could put a
couple of clematis aswell. How far away from the rose would I plant them ?

If you google you will get several hits about roses and clematis. Including several old MN threads!

Do you want the clematis to flower at the same time as the rose (nice interplay) or at a different time (extends the flowering season)? Think about what Group the clematis will be in because they will have different pruning regimes; it would be helpful to coordinate it with the rose-pruning.

Clematis: pruning / RHS

Clematis: pruning / RHS

Regular pruning of clematis encourages strong growth and flowering and keeps the growth in check. If left unpruned, clematis can turn into a mass of tangled stems with bare base and flowers well above eye level.

You could add a Clematis to plant with the rose but I'd be inclined to leave it til next year so the rose can get going. I'd choose a Clematis in prune group 3 (late flowering) as you can prune it as the same time as your rose. If you have group 1 or 3 you will have to prune round them which is a real pain. Avoid C. montana - too vigorous!
