Flowering plants for a tricky spot

I have a garden bed that is against the eastern fence and has a polycarbonate-roofed pergola on the western side. So, it gets no morning sun, very filtered afternoon sun, and an absolute blast of heat and sunshine from overhead for a couple of hours in the middle of the day, as well as the eastern fence getting hot to the touch in summer.

I would have liked to put hydrangeas there, in terms of looks, but they wouldn’t cope with the heat. Any ideas for flowering plants of a similar style that would cope with these conditions? I would love something scented and prolific as it’s generally a dingy area. Thanks!

You could try a rose. I've got a thriving Blush Noisette in a similar spot.

Day Lillies? They do my head in as they are prolific and so hardy. They’ve taken over one of my beds. But I reckon they have their uses…

This. Ours are in full sun for most of the day and they are massive and very happy.

You could try a Hydrangea paniculata or arborescens as they seen to cope with heat more than the H. macrophyllas ( mopheads and lacecaps)

I am going to try some daylilies, a crinum lily and a cream clivia - will see how I go :)

White Buddleja does well in hot sun.

Clivias are not hardy, being South African bulbs, only really suitable for a conservatory.

Oh sorry @NanTheWiser I didn’t mention I’m in the southern hemisphere and clivias grow happily outside here, though their leaves may burn in too much afternoon sun. I have split my existing clivia to provide one for this bed.

Aah! That puts a whole different perspective on it! Lucky you to be able to grow them outside!
