How to clean green moldy decking

Just that really...my decking is really bad green moldy and dirty. It's needs a good clean but whatever o do has to be dog friendly. I have a pressure washer but it's hella messy. Was thinking along the lines of putting something on it and then washing/scrubbing it off ????

I’ve always used decking cleaner, pressure washer and a firm broom- my least favourite job every year as it is messy but essential before repainting

Washing up liquid, hot water and a stiff brush works on ours.

Never use a pressure washer on decking. Try green bleach: Sodium Percarbonate.

Petuniaspetal · 12/03/2025 21:31

Thank you all for this. I managed to get some Sodium Percarbonate and it has lifted the worst of it off. I had abandon it half way through due to other stuff going on but hopefully I will get back at it tomorrow.

Going to give the fairy liquid a go to....for future reference purposes.

I watched a few videos on some decking cleaner and they didn't give the all clear for pets so I want to avoid them. Even the Percarbonate I washed my dogs paws just in case.

It is a filthy job though. Mine was particularly bad as I'm up north and my decking has been wet since this time last year, and so was particularly mouldy and green this year.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Blimey where did you get get the green bleach from? I assumed mail order only. That was a quick turnaround. There is youtube video where he applies, does a bit of brushing then rinses off with a hose.

My brother had some he had from a few years ago during covid. I mentioned it in passing ...he thought he had some ashe doesnt have decking anymore..low and behold it was in his cavern of a garage. Couldn't believe my luck.

I've only just got home from work, so I'm having a cuppa then off out to finish the decking off. Will try some fairy liquid on a bit of it too to see if that works.

Thanks all again.

Spray it all with white vinegar and then use a combination of pressure washer and scrubbing. It should come off ok. If you continue to give it an odd spray with the vinegar every few weeks, it should help prevent a return.

We've just cleaned mossy green stuff off wooden fence panels with warm water and white vinegar, painted it on, left for a few hours, then pressure washed off - came up really well, and no need for chemicals. It's a messy job but so glad we tackled it.

Biological washing powder and a stiff brush.

Biological washing powder and a stiff brush.

I did try this on patches on a bit of conceetw i have, it did work but i was still trying to wash off the white for a few days afterwards. I did ask the person who told me about using washing powder whether bio or non bio was the way to go, but he just said any cheap washing powder. I did just use some of my Surf tropical lily...(😄) ...it smelt nice ...not sure if it was bio or non tbh.

Fairy liquid might make it slippy. If you are using green bleach let it sit long enough so every bit of green disappears before you start scrubbing.
