Seeking purple garden paint

JennnyFlo · 06/03/2025 08:47

I want to paint my shed a rich deep purple colour. However all the paints on offer seem to have a pink/lilac vibe. The sort of colours my DD liked as a pre teen.

Has anyone managed to source a more classy purple?

Cuprinol do a Damson and a Purple Pansy, both are strong purple 🟣

B&Q Valspar paint has versions for indoor and outdoor use but I don't know if that includes garden paint. You can have whatever colour you like mixed.

This is Cuprinol Purple Pansy - it's the first coat on a garden gate that;s not been painted or years!

They all look very nice but I guess I'm looking for more of a stately home interiors vibe 😄

Go to B&Q and ask at the paint desk. You can get it colour matched into a shade you like or choose one of the ones from a different brand. I’m currently in love with dulux heritage Wild Blackberry. Farrow & Ball also have a deep purple called Pelt.

(to add they may say they can only do certain colours in garden paints, but when I worked there, there was a way to trick the machine. They’ll know what I mean )

Good Luck

I just wanted to say that purple outdoor paint does not age well. My neighbour painted her exterior woodwork, gate and fence and it looks absolutely awful once it gets even a little grubby and fades.

It does include garden paint. We have Valspar on our shed.

Little greene do garden and outside paint in all their shades I think

granted it’s not cheap though

If F&B do exterior paint have you thought about Brinjal? It's a deep aubergine.

Fibrous · 06/03/2025 11:50

Little green outdoor paint is great.

Yep I would do this. They have an oil eggshell - Toms Oil.

Hard to get oil based in decent colours these days.

POSTC123 · 06/03/2025 12:05

Just been to have a look at LG colours. They do lack dark purples. I would try this one though… https://www.littlegreene.com/purple-brown?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiArKW-BhAzEiwAZhWsIK7FMGwhQf0KfuE-GbFe-M-RvOdFVTjyhR1SRlk3cl42zNc4jzEIUhoCOukQAvD_BwE

It looks near black. But outdoors and things look much lighter!!! So it could be lovely and potentially quite stately home.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/03/2025 13:00

I was going to suggest Cordoba from Little Greene, but while it looks very dark in a shady interior it's much lighter in the sun.

ETA: Little Greene paint is a dream so while ot looks expensive you don't need a lot of coats.

Alternately you could look at linseed oil which is better for wood and would last a lot longer than petrochemical based paint. While the standard ranges are quite small a few companies say they will colour match so you just need to find the colour you want and then get it.

Thanks so much for all the lovely suggestions. I'm going to get some samples and see which one I'm wowed by.

This one is lovely, I'm considering it for my new shed.

When you've chosen your perfect colour I would get it colour-matched to Zinsser All Coat water-based paint - guaranteed for 15 years. Self-priming, needs only two coats and a joy to use.

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 07/03/2025 14:00

Frenchic Al Fresco can be used outside.

Rust-Oleum (via their website) sent me a sample of their 'purple' garden paint for 99p.

It was too pinky but useful to be able to rule it out.

Choosing a paint for outside use can be tricky - the sun makes the colour look less intense. Suggest you go outside when you are at the paint shop to help choose a shade.

Whataretalkingabout · 08/03/2025 13:59

You could use a milk based casein paint. All natural old fashioned paint that fades beautifully, top it in linseed oil. Very inexpensive and covers well. Or you could use a lime based paint , as in France or Italy whicn has a mineral and pigment base. Neither have the horrible plastic petro chemical base.

Love your choice of deep blue violet!

JennnyFlo · 09/03/2025 17:14

Whataretalkingabout and others

Really appreciating all the advice. It's getting a bit more complicated then buying a tin off the shelf at B&Q!
