Honeysuckle? There are lots if varieties to choose from and many need very little attention. What size pot and will the plant be in shade / full sun??

Saturn74 · 11/05/2008 21:33

Was going to suggest honeysuckle too.
Even I can grown it, and I seem to be incapable of growing clematis.

chewlips · 11/05/2008 21:33

Clematis - think thats what its called. very pretty flower.

Whatever you do please do not plant "passion flower" it grows like a weed, everywhere you don't want it, its horrendous stuff and so stubborn!

donbean · 11/05/2008 21:34

yes, full sun for the most of the day.
will get what ever size pot that will need.

will google huneysuckle.
thanksyou

Although passion flower has a gorgeous flower, its just so hard to maintain.

Furball · 11/05/2008 21:35

does it really have to be in a pot. Just that with plants whatever is above ground, the same is under so could be restrictive for a climber.

quint · 11/05/2008 21:35

Potato vine - doesn;t sound very glamourous, but flowers forever and grows very quickly

donbean · 11/05/2008 21:36

ooh have grown passion flower before in the house.
tis pretty but a pain as you say.

honeysuckle

i had a fantastic honeysuckle hedge, started as 3 little cuttings that grew and grew,

moondog · 11/05/2008 21:36

I have huge passion flower all over back of my house. It looks after itself.

I've just put some hops in which are lovely.
How about Virginia creeper?
Honeysuckle the best though.

PeaGreene · 11/05/2008 21:37

Loads and loads of different types of clematis, some flower in spring, some in summer. they do tend to like having their roots in the shade though, so if the pot's in full sun, might not be ideal.

donbean · 11/05/2008 21:37

ive got a potato vine, just planted so its not moved yet. looks healthy but need a fast climber which is pretty.

Tinker · 11/05/2008 21:37

Jasmine is lovely.

southeastastra · 11/05/2008 21:38

virgina creeper

SlartyBartFast · 11/05/2008 21:38

you can get climbing roses too

donbean · 11/05/2008 21:38

honeysuckle it is then, thanks xxx

fishie · 11/05/2008 21:38

clematis like cool shady roots so will be very miserable in a pot in sun unless it is a really gigantic pot.

i had a very bad experience with honeysuckle, aphids and ants but that was in shade.

Tinker · 11/05/2008 21:39

Isn't Russian vine also called Mile a Minute vine or something. Grows quickly anyway

donbean · 11/05/2008 21:39

oohh hadnt thought of virginia creeper, im going to look these all up on google.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/05/2008 21:42

my parents have 2 clematis in tiny pots in full sun growing on an arch - they are fantastic - always amazes me how well they are growing in conditions which they shouldn't like.

chewlips · 11/05/2008 21:45

Sorry to be thick, but does Virginia Creeper flower? Only reason I ask is that is what I thought we had growing up the side of our house when we moved in, and it has never flowered.(could be just me getting muddled, I am so good at that!) [or perhaps mine was not the flowering kind!]

Tinker · 11/05/2008 21:46

No, Virginia Creeper doesn't flower but does turn a fantastic red colour in autumn

chewlips · 11/05/2008 21:47

That is what I thought, we had this over the entire side of our house, it was gorgeous, but it was so out of control we had to get rid of most of it.

FloridaKbear · 11/05/2008 21:49

don't let it climb over the roof of the garage, or you may end up with having to replace the roof at great cost like we did grrrr but that was ivy.

TurkeyLurkey · 11/05/2008 21:49

Glad I have found this thread as I need some climbers in pots too...can I do a quick hijack and ask if a honeysuckle loses its leaves in winter? Is there such a thing as an evergreen climber? (have a nasty wall to cover).....
