Spring tidy up

What chores do you usually do in the garden now ready for spring? Mine looks a bit of a mess and I want to get some things done before the new growth starts taking over!

Just been out for a wander and the spring plants are just about to start flowering so itching to get out there now.

It’s been difficult to get the dead stuff down and the ( millions) beech leaves off the borders this year, it’s been so wet! This morning I filled one of the green waste bins with the leaves, Oh and I planted some hyacinth which I had overlooked 😧 but which were bravely showing green anyway.

It is very soggy underfoot at the moment, but I have managed to spend several hours out there today. Only about 3 square metres sorted so far, and I've completely filled our garden waste recycling bin, so I have come in for a rest and a cup of tea.

Please don't be too tidy too soon! I know it is so tempting to get out and get tidying and sorting but so many insects will be overwintering in those piles of leaves and material, if you can wait until the temperature is consistently over 10 degrees, your garden will thank you when you have plenty of pollinators in the summer!

It was lovely out there today. There were lots of insects out sunbathing and feels like spring might actually be close by!

I am resisting tidying as so many insects use the leaf litter and old perennial stems to hibernate in.
I have planted some new perennials today, done a bit of light weeding and pruned the clematis and viburnum.
I'll cut back in about a month. Once the weather is relaibly better!

I’ve done some lawn maintenance with reseeding. Split up geraniums and some clumps of forget me nots and moved stuff around. Taken a load of leaves off the poor polyanthus which were hiding below. Swept the patio and arranged some pots. And cleaned a fountain

Emptied the greenhouse and scrubbed and hosed it down to remove moss and the green gunk on the windows. Put it all back in tidy so I can do some seeds this coming week and pot up my new fruit bushes. It’s big, old and a still a bit grubby, but much better.

I'll take a tip from you and do some lawn reseeding and just hope it won't get washed away. We've had hard frost followed by heavy rain and it's so soggy

Finished pruning group 3 Clematis. Taken down flower stems of Hylotelephium and Phlomis. Cut back Miscanthus. Edged lawn - too wet to cut but edging makes it look a lot better. I don't think of gardening as a chore!

I always miss the boat cutting back the Dogwood , usually it goes from Oh that;s pretty and red to Oh it's got leaves , I'd best leave it in the blink of an eye .
This year , I caught it at the right moment and cut it back ( not to much though ) so it should get some nice springey new shoots .

I cut back a climbing rose

Now waiting to see when I can plant seeds up . (Not yet )
