Could anyone help me find this house plant from my (bad) description?

Trying to locate a houseplant of my childhood.

my Mum called it ‘mother of thousands’ - it was similar in size and habit to my ‘string of hearts’ but unlike that plant it had a dense crown. Searching brings me to a trailing saxifrage - and it is MUCH like that - a dense crown with very thin tendrils and little disc shaped leaves, but the leaves aren’t right.

my plant has thick leaves which are hairy on the underside, dark green with a tiny bit of variegation. more like a violet leaf.

so, basically, a plant which looks a lot like a trailing saxifrage but isn’t that.

any ideas?

The only one I know of is Saxifraga stolonifera commonly known as “mother of thousands” which more or less matches your description. I have the variegated form, which I keep indoors as it isn’t hardy.

Could it be a Tradescantia zebrina - 'Wandering Jew’ you’re thinking of? The violet leaves you describe are what’s making me think of it.

String of Turtles?

Mykittensmittens · 17/02/2025 18:21

Thank you. Nope @Skade I have one of those. This is very thin almost hair like tendrils.

@Seeline no but I do love that one too, I may have to have one!!!

I think @NanTheWiser you must be right and maybe I am misremembering the hairy leaves? Im
going to get one anyway. I love the trailing habit. Thank you.

String of pearls? https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/senecio-string-of-pearls/tka8317TM

Skybyrd · 17/02/2025 20:24

There's also string of teardrops Senecio Herrianus, which has less thin tendrils and pointed leaves. Searching for 'plants similar to Senecio Herrianus' brings up several possibilities too.

The one I know as Mother of Thousands is a Kalanchoe. The “thousands” were the tiny plants that formed around the leaf.

I think it became illegal because it was invasive and toxic to animals.

But I could be talking rubbish, it’s been a long time since I thought of it.

Yes, that is also known as “Mother of thousands”, but a completely different plant. Not illegal in the UK, but very invasive in a greenhouse!

@Mykittensmittens I’m pretty sure it is the Saxifraga, and the leaves are a bit hairy!

Mykittensmittens · 17/02/2025 21:53

@Skybyrd neither of those - although I do love my string of pearls too (reminds me, I must give it a trim and repot the cuttings as it’s now almost 3ft long!!)

@NanTheWiser I’ve ordered one, and a string of turtles too (couldn’t resist!) so will report back!

if you have an IPhone download the PictureThis app, free. When you try to use it, it asks for payment, but at the top right of the screen is an almost invisible ‘x’, click on this ‘x’ and then use the app (camera) for free. It’s usually very very good for identification.

Strawberry Begonia?

I have this plant, it's got hairy leaves. I used to grow it as a house plant, but it's somehow made its way into the garden 🙂It grows new plants from the leaf centres.

Thanks! PlantNet is also good. Sadly I don’t have this plant; I’m acting on nostalgia!
