Tidy climbing rose for tight space (pic)

Gardening newbie here! Any recommendations for a climbing rose to plany here? It faces south-west so gets lots of sun by around midday, to late afternoon in the summer.

The bed is quite narrow (45cm?), not sure how deep (looks like it is lined) - not sure if the limited space is an issue for the rose roots?

Ideally looking for a rose that is:

  • 'tidy'; doesn't grow too fast / get too unwieldy (rather not have to prune multiple times a year)
  • doesn't climb too far - would prefer for it to grow half way across the arch - we had a plant growing the whole way over and it created too much shade, making the grass muddy (i know i could just prune it back if needed)
  • scented
  • ideally small-ish flowers
  • ideally evergreen/semi evergreen
  • ideally less thorns
  • open to various colour options

Or if a rose would struggle here, any other 'tidy climber' recommendations? We previously had jasmine which grew faster than we could handle.

Lastly, any recommendations for companion flowers /ground cover to plant in the bed around the base that will help the rose grow well/ protect from disease?

Thanks so much : )

Not sure about the variety of rose (watching with interest) but you do need to make sure it will have a deep enough root run - they like to go deep! Salvia planted around the base helps prevent blackspot, apparently!

Thank you! I guess I could try digging to check how deep it is. If the depth is limited do you know if the rose plant would be ok since it could potentially spread its roots horizontally? I suppose I could also see if the membrane could be removed just under the rose plant, depending on what's underneath.

Madame Alfred Carrière’ AGMGM*_
• Long flowering
• Position: Sun or part shade
• Height: 6m

If you love the romance of old rosess and like an easy life, this vies for the crown of best climbing rose. Lovely blush-white flowers with a delicious, strong scent are produced for months amongst nearly thornless foliage. Although an old rose, dating back to 1879, it is healthy, repeat flowers, and will even grow on a north-facing wall. Unsurprisingly, it was the first rose planted by rose-aficionado Vita Sackville-West at Sissinghurst Castle Gardenn in Kent. Deadhead to prolong flowering.

No suggestions but I really like what you’ve done with your space OP 😊

Mme Alfred Carrière is a beautiful rose, OP, i second @Chuchoter's suggestion.
If you wanted a deep colour then Guinée is a shortish climber with very deep red, almost burgundy flowers, with a strong fragrance.
Paul's Scarlet Climber is a well-behaved, not too tall climber which flowers over a long period. (Supposed to be the original 'last rose of summer.')

Blush Noisette
This one is actually planted with a Trachelospermum Jasminoides so there's plenty there in winter but it does retain some leaves.
It's stunning for months and the scent is unbelievable

Oooh this one looks lovely! How does it grow? Do you find you need to prune it often, or is it quite well behaved?

Thankyou @Chuchoter & @SiobhanSharpe Mme Alfred Carrière looks lovely, but it grows quite tall - 6m, so not sure if the tight bed would give enough space for it's roots? Do you find it grows v fast/ need regular pruning? (v new to gardening!)

Haha thanks! I can't take credit, it was already like this (actually, sadly, it was nicer before we moved in... a few plants have perished..!)

Never pruned it. It's very well behaved and I just bend bits around and tie them in. It's been there for 5 years now.
I do deadhead it a lot (most days) although it doesn't really need it but I have a lot of time on my hands.

My Madame Alfred grows pretty big, I need to prune quite hard to keep it to the height of my cottage. Lovely rose though.

If you want its growth to be restricted then restricting its roots will achieve that.

David Austen allow you to search for all those features so for example here are Short, scented climbers.

David Austin roses are simply the best!

Mme Alfred Carriere is massive. I look after one on the gable end of a barn. I have just started training it by 'niffing' to try and keep more of the growth. It will swamp your arch.

Thank you, good to know!

Zephyrine Drouhin is thornless. Climbing Cecile Brunner has few thorns, and small flowers
