When to plant bulbs

I dug up all my tulip and hyacinth bulbs at the end of summer (they'd got quite clustered so I intend to replant and spread them out a bit) .

What's the latest I can re plant them?

Is it weird to plant the in my front lawn?

I planted mine back in early December and was feeling a little late, most are just starting to sprout up just now actually. You could get them in the ground and see what happens but I think they need that cold spell to get their growing on, may just be ok.

Definitely not strange for a front garden, I've got some dotted amongst shrubs in mine. I've actually just found some purple alliums I should have planted last year so I'll be throwing them in this weekend and keeping everything crossed!

Plant them today - see what happens.

They definitely won’t flower where they are, so get them in the ground.

You are late, which may mean some don’t grow or flower, or they will flower later than normal. I had a variety of different bulbs that I planted in February a few years ago. Some were fine and looked amazing. Some just put up leaves. The others did nothing.

Best time = in the autumn.

Given you didn't, 2nd best time = today!

Ok thanks. Can I leave them in the shed until this autumn? 😬

You can do, but you will lose some if not all, and they’ll all be losing food reserves and you won’t get a good flower display in 2026. Alternatively you can plant now and give the rest of the season to build up food reserves for a good display.

i’m not sure how well hyacinths and tulips compete with grass. The tulips may be ok - the tiny species grow happily in grass. But you won’t be able to mow until the leaves have died down
