I need a very resilient plant for spot with no sun

I am looking for some help from all you experts if possible please!

I need some very, very low maintenance plants suitable for a planter, in a spot that is north facing and gets no light. Is there such a thing?

Thanks

Peace lily? Nothing kills those feckers!

Hosta, astilbe or ferns. These all do well in my dark border.

AlwaysPurple · 01/02/2025 14:34

Presumably you mean outside? Huerchera, ferns, cordylines all do well in low light and don't need much attention.

SerenStarEtoile · 01/02/2025 14:34

Sarcococca?

thefamilyofthings · 01/02/2025 14:34

Also golden hop; lovely splash of brightness and tough as old boots

I forgot to say, it's for an outside spot. I read this about a peace lily 'The plant does not need large amounts of light or water to survive. It is most often grown as a houseplant. However, it can withstand the elements well enough to thrive when planted outdoors in hot and humid situations'.

We're in rainy UK so peace lily out?

Ferns are good.

Hostas are good in shade but slugs and snails love them. Same for hellebores.

Portuguese Laurel will thrive anywhere, but gets large.

Hydrangeas are ok in shade, might just not flower all that profusely

YY to sarcococca. Evergreen and smells gorgeous in flower

My camelia is doing well in a pot in a corner with no sun.
Do need to be mindful of vineweevils though.

Gastropod · 01/02/2025 14:47

My camelia is thriving in a shady carnet of my north facing garden. It barely ever gets sun and flowers beautifully every year in late winter/early spring.

Gastropod · 01/02/2025 14:47

Corner, sorry!

Except cold UK winters!

And slugs

Yeah I definitely wouldn't put a peace lily outside, poor thing wouldn't survive the winter

Namechangehsbdhdhdh · 06/02/2025 15:43

Some hydrangeas.

be cautious with lilies if you have cats that use the space.

wohmum · 06/02/2025 15:52

Sarcoccoa is lovely and smells fab in winter - available now in garden centres . Quite slow growing lovely glossy dark green leaves and white flowers

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/02/2025 15:57

Fatsia japonica. Evergreen, thrives in complete shade.

Koulibiak · 06/02/2025 16:26

I also came in to say Fatsia japonica. Tough as old boots, great foliage, no pests.

Pulmonaria does well in a dark spot under trees in my garden.

I have a fernery in my north facing front garden. They are thriving and look lovely year round.

Or you could try aspidistra, it’s mostly known as an indestructible house plant (cast iron plant) but is actually hardy to about -12.
