Hi hive mind. Can you identify this plant. I'd love it in my garden.

Cosmos

ladyinthecampervan · 28/01/2025 21:14

I initially thought cosmos, but the leaves look more like dahlia leaves.
Either would look lovely in your garden OP

Dahlias

Daisymay2 · 28/01/2025 21:19

I think it is a cactus dahlia, I have grown them from seed, although they then form tubers and have kept them for a couple of years.
Cosmos look similar but have feathery leaves.

Geneticsbunny · 28/01/2025 21:19

I think the red and yellow ones are dahlias. The red one might be bishop of llandaff?

I don't have much luck with them because I don't have time to dig them up and we have clay soil so they just rot over winter but you might be luckier.

imustbeanidiot · 28/01/2025 21:42

If you took the photo with an iPhone, if you scroll up on the photo it will give you an information page and identify the plant.
It's a brilliant feature.

goingtotown · 28/01/2025 21:46

Dahlia pinnata.

LikeABat · 28/01/2025 21:48

Dahlia.
You can grow very cheaply from seed. Try a mix such as Bishop's children or Coltness hybrid. There are much fancier ones such as Cactus types, doubles, pompoms etc.

Crazykefir · 28/01/2025 22:04

Thanks hive mind I'll give it a go.

Aren’t cactus dahlias the ones whose petals are rolled into points?

It can also be spectacularly wrong, so any ids need to be checked with other sources.

The problem with id apps is that they are often used by people who haven’t the slightest clue what the plant is, and therefore haven’t a clue that the name given by the app is completely wrong.

The ones I purchased weren't, they were like the ones in the photo. I’ve had a look at some of seed companies on line and there seems to be a mixture of pointy ones and round ones.

lcakethereforeIam · 29/01/2025 15:44

Reminds me of the dwarf mix dahlia that I grew from a packet of Unwin's seed.

user989 · 29/01/2025 18:47

theyre dahlias. Cosmos have completely different leaves

Crazykefir · 29/01/2025 19:34

Thanks now i can see why all the fuss about dahlias😍

The Dahlia Society’s explanation of the different groups

Classification - National Dahlia Society

There are many different types of dahlias which are classified into groups.
