Ideas for transforming a miserable slabbed garden

I've seen a house I've fallen in love with and we want to put an offer on. However, the outside space is utterly depressing. The garden is a triangle shape but it's entirely slabbed over. Does anyone have any before and after pics or ideas of how I could transform it into something lovely? I need green and plants! DP says we can just get some pots but that just isn't cutting it for me. I really need a proper garden

Without seeing a picture, knowing the size, orientation, shade, drainage etc it is impossible to be specific but essentially you just lift the slabs & base, put down some topsoil & organic matter and plant/turf/seed.

Full marks for wanting a living garden.👍

Lift slabs put down top soil and plant according to the conditions.
Check neighbouring gardens to see what grows well in the area.

Yeag I posted here first but didn't get any replies so posted on AIBU afterwards where I got some useful replies pretty much straight away. I wasn't sure of the gardening talk got much traffic but particularly welcome suggestions from keen gardeners 😀

Any photos of the area op? I design gardens.

Pp are right. If it's just slabs then it should be easy enough with some elbow grease to take them all up. Might be a sub-base underneath which would be compacted gravel)crushed rock which you will want to remove. Depending on the size of the garden you will likely need a skip. Then bulk buy tonn bags of top soil to the level you want.

Adding a basic lawn and beds will make a massive difference. Plants will be the expensive bit so I would bulk buy online.

Thanks. Its a house we want to buy. The house has so much character but the garden is just a concrete jungle. I think it's south facing though so hopefully gers a good amount of sun. Some pics attached

Oh it's a great space!
Lots you can do with it. It could be an absolutly georgious sheltered garden. If you think its too big of a job to take them all up at once, you could always take out a couple of strips and make borders, keeping a patio for now. You would just want tt fix the edge slabs if they arent already concreted in place.

It certainly wouldn't put me off buying the property.

If you end up getting it I would be happy to have a look at the proper measurements to help with ideas!

Of course!

I've recently removed artificial grass from my garden after buying the house. It almost out me off buying it but with a bit of hard graft got it looking lovely now. What I would say is do not underestimate the amount of stuff you can sell/give away which people will come to your house for! We didn't need a skip and got rid of tonnes of hardcore and sand on Facebook marketplace!
Id prob keep some e of the paving as a patio as someone else has suggested. Design the garden around this...

TeaChocKitKat · 12/01/2025 22:45

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It's encouraging to know there is hope to turn it into something pretty!

Maybe think of removing slabs as the long term goal? In the meantime you can achieve a lot with pots. There are lots of inspirational videos on YouTube, here’s one

I am not a gardener but could you put in some raised beds on top of the slabs and fill with topsoil. I know you wouldn't be able to plant any deep root trees.
