Hello

I have a spot by my front door id love a rose in a pot, thornless one. The area is quite shaded. I don't want it to climb up the brickwork just be in a pot with an oblisk, I don't know how many kinds can tolerate shade so any recommendations are welcome! Thank you

I've been looking for similar and was recommended Ghislaine de Feligonde. I only planted it a few weeks ago though so I can't tell you whether it has lived up to the recommendation!

I know that New Dawn is supposed to still flower well in shade, it is a climber so not helpful in this scenario - but at least indicates that roses for shade do exist!

There’s no doubt of that. My Rosa mundi flowers its socks off on the N wall of my house.

Try a David Austin, Mary Delaney rose. Can tolerate shade and is almost thornless. I have one growing up a trellis, it has a delicate smell and beautiful pink flowers.

I've got a Rosa mundi early last year, or late the previous year, I think as a bare root from David Austin. We've got it in a big pot in a fairly shady spot. It did flower prolifically, and has a lovely scent, but, as an old variety, we just got one flush of blooms then that was it. It was my fellas choice and I warned him but did he listen? Oh no....<wanders off muttering>

I have Generous gardener next to my front door in heavy shade. Only gets a couple of hours sun in the morning. It flowers and seems happy, but it does get quite big

I quite like roses not being repeating. I like the succession of the seasons. Feels odd to have roses in the autumn. The Rosa mundi has spread itself from the front door right round the bay window to the outside wall of the house - I’m happy to have that glorious show in June and not get accustomed to it for the next 4 months.
