Garlic in containers

I could plant garlic in the ground, but the space available is not the sunniest part of the garden and I understand that garlic loves sun.

Has anyone had good results/size bulbs planting garlic in grow bags or containers?

I think you may find a growbag is not deep enough for the bulbs to form. You can grow it in pots or planters, but you will have to water them regularly as pots can dry out very quickly in the summer.

I would plant it in the ground. Even if it is not in direct sunlight all day it will grow.

If your garden is very shady you could consider planting some ramson (wild garlic). That normally grows under trees as it needs shady conditions.

Thanks @Aaron95 - by grow bag I didn’t mean the shallow tomato ones, I meant the canvas type ones that are common now of which you can get ones a couple of feet deep, so similar to pots.

I’ll probably experiment and grow some in pots/grow bags and some in the semi shaded ground and see!

Go for it. Garlic is pretty easy to grow and now is the time to get it in the ground.

I planted some yesterday in a growing bag, one I'd used previously for potatoes and beetroot. Never grown garlic before, so I'm interested to see what happens. Best of luck with yours OP.

The great thing is that you can position the bags for the garlic to get maximum sun.
Good luck!
