How to move an elderflower?

I planted an elderflower in my new garden in spring this year, it was about 30cm tall then and it’s now over 6ft. I now need to move it as I hadn’t appreciated how big it would get. It’s still very much putting out new growth. I should wait until it’s dropped its leaves, but do I also cut it back before I relocated it? Thank you!

They are pretty tough. I would give it a good trim and then dig it up and move it. Make sure it doesn't dry out for the first month or so.
This time of year is a really good time to move plants.
Elders will grow back from almost nothing so you can't cut them back too much.

Oh yes, they can really get massive. I'd prune it back quite hard now, and dig it up to replant. This is the right time of year for moving shrubs so it should be fine.

From next year, prune it as you would a buddleia.

I've had elderflowers re-grow from sticks pushed in the ground so as above I wouldn't worry about losing it. My main concern would be that you'll end up with two thriving elderflowers if you leave enough root behind so make sure you are as thorough as possible when you dig it out!

Great thank you! So I don’t need to wait for the leaves to fall? I’ll cut it back and move it to a better position now. Every time I look at it, it seems to have shot up a few more inches!
