Holes in potatoes

Dug up all of my main crop now and notice that some have holes. Are these likely from a worm or other pest?

Also notice that some have a very crusty surface and wonder what causes this?

The crusty surface is scab - doesn't affect edibility. It's most likely in dryer conditions. Some varieties are resistant.

The holes are usually beetle larvae. Again, some varieties are resistant. Crop rotation also helps.

Aah ok. Won’t plant tatties there next year.

You can get a nematode treatment. Otherwise just keep the ground well dug over and avoid using it for spuds and carrots for a while.

That's assuming it is larvae - it could also be slugs. The former leave a simple tunnel all the way though, the latter make a hole that leads to a little cave
