I want to add a pergola to the side of my house (1908 terrace) in the back garden, with a roof to protect from Manchester rain. It needs to be about 2m wide and 2.40m deep. I've seen some kits online. Any experiences to share or advice to give?

Hey, isn’t that a verandah?

or does a verandah need to have its long side against the house?

I think a verandah is raised. And normally in the tropics, not Manchester haha

Plenty of Victorian villas have verandahs..

We have something similar on our house. No advice on building as it was here when we moved in. It has a plastic roof and is extremely useful - amazing how dry everything stays under it. We have a washing line underneath and can dry washing even when it's raining. So I can endorse it as a plan!

We have a glass roofed veranda and most definitely not in the tropics!😆
Provides terrific protection across the back of the house and means that even in the worst weather we can leave the door open while Ddog decides if he is going out or not.🐶

A pergola was traditionally wooden and open topped but nowadays the aluminium ones with adjustable slats are very popular.
A lot cheaper than a veranda.
