Fed up of cats pooing in my garden. What can I do to deter them?

As the title says I am so tired of picking up cat poo from my garden. I don't have a cat but one of the neighbours a few doors down has quite a few and they have increasingly taken to using my garden and new flower bed as their litter tray. I purchased one of those green solar powered machines that is supposed to scare away cats with their noise and while it was effective for a short while it isn't anymore. Does anyone have tried and tested methods that worked? Thank you

Did you not know what a cat was before getting one?

My wife owns a second floor flat. We were interviewing potential tenants and one person asked if it might be ok if they got a cat at some point in the future.

The flat has solid oak floors that we fitted ourselves.

She didn't get a callback!

My next door neighbours cat is a pain in the arse, we actually caught it on our security camera sitting on my car and promptly throwing up over the bonnet, was nitnhappy to come put and find that on my car. They are ignorant and Ryde so nit worth trying ro speak to them about it

We planted a couple of thousand cocktail sticks in the front flowerbeds.

This works but if you miss anywhere, they will go there. I also save bits of twigs from thorny bushes to poke in the soil.

Went out this morning to find some fresh cat poo in the flower bed 😭. So I have added lots more Holly branches and ordered some of the lions poo that was recommended.

I potted up some bulbs today. Ran out of bedding plants to add on top so I have added some cut lavender that I pruned. Is this a good idea to do?

Coffee grounds. You can shake them everywhere.

Also that is a nicely ironed garment

Garment?

We tried all the usual deterrents orange peel, citrus oil, garlic, egg shells, scaring them, water pistols , electronic deterrent thing off Amazon. Nothing worked till an elderly neighbour advised to spray jeyes fluid on the fence and any paving areas at the perimeter and that solved the problem immediately

Does it continue to work after it has rained?

He told us to just re spray every 3-6 months and it works !

Orangeto · 19/10/2024 17:46

I assume they really hate the smell we haven’t even seen any cats since we started doing it

Everyone suggesting water pistols, I've been trying that for months, it's not working. Hard faced fuckers

Jeyes fluid is toxic, and can kill cats, and other wildlife. It's toxic to aquatic life, and kills worms etc. Please, please, don't just spray it around and leave it. Your elderly neighbour is giving very bad outdated advice.

If it is sprayed on it will dry. Cats and wildlife know what is bad for them and avoid. I have a garden full of Lilies but I haven’t seen or heard of any cats being poisoned round here. They just don’t go near them.
Jeyes fluid is recommended on the tin to disinfect animal housing. They could hardly do that if they was a chance of poisoning. We use Jeyes fluid to wash the bird feeders because of avian flu.

I have tried everything (except the Jeyes fluid) mentioned on this thread.
I just went out in the garden and found a big cat poo in my flower bed right next to the prickly Holly leaves I placed to deter them.
Am I just going to have to resign to having cat poo in my garden?

Loads of holly leaves@Rosemaryandlavender1 loads. I do have three holly bushes so it's easy to get for me.
