Not much sun as it’s almost an alleyway leading to the garage.
I’m also not much of a gardener, so any easy to grow climbers ( that will grow in shade ) or any other suggestions greatly received.
thank you.

Paint it, with lovely flower patterns

Butterflyfern · 07/10/2024 07:57

Does that wall get any sun at all? If so, when (mornings/evenings, only in the summer)?

Are you looking for pots? As I assume there's no soil to plant into the ground?

If very little sun, I'd be tempted to put up a couple of shelves and line up pots of hostas and ferns. Repaint the wall too, obviously

BigDahliaFan · 07/10/2024 07:58

Can you plant into the ground? Or does it have to be pots?

If you can plant in the ground most climbers prefer that. If you can I'd do a variegated ivy, nice flowers, good for bees. Or climbing hydrangea. No supports needed.

In a pot evergreen jasmine works in a big planter...and you could plant some spring bulbs too. www.rhs.org.uk/plants/18287/trachelospermum-jasminoides/details. But it'll need a trellis or wires put up.

My back kitchen door has a similar view (fence tho) and I've done similar. I love how it looks and almost feels like it's an extension of my lovely, bright, sunny kitchen

If you can plant into the ground I would go for a climbing hydrangea and/ or Boston ivy. They are both self cloning so you don't need wires and will provide some nice green. The hydrangea will have pretty flowers in summer and the Boston ivy has beautiful autumn colour.

If the wall isn't yours you might want to check with the owner before planting though.

Soontobe60 · 07/10/2024 08:22

Is this your wall?

CatherinedeBourgh · 07/10/2024 08:30

The thing to make sure is that any climbers you plant are not too vigorous, or you could end up with a problem.

If you like the look of Boston Ivy, look at Parthenocissus Henryana instead, it is less vigorous (and has a more interesting leaf in the summer). It's not evergreen though, so will not look great in winter.

If you want evergreen, there are many ivies that will do the trick and grow in shade, but again be sure they are not too rampant. If you look in the RHS website, it will tell you the ultimate sizes of any varieties you like the look of.

AmusedMaker · 07/10/2024 08:50

Thank you all! Really appreciate your suggestions.

Soontobe60 - No it’s my neighbours wall.

Butterflyfern - It gets a little bit of sun but not very much. And yes, no soil at the bottom so would be planting in pots.

I agree with PP asking if it's your wall - as a neighbour I'd be pissed off with someone painting my wall or planting climbers to go up it!
What about shrubs in pots or something? Moveable trellis with climbers? Like this..?

Google 'garden screen', there are lots of nice ones in the market. Consider adding some fairy lights or festoon lights if you like them.

You could add the little pots on the screen with ivy's and ferns which would look lovely, but be very honest with yourself about whether you'll remember to water them - I wouldn't!

If you do want pots, consider buying the biggest you can, like massive, they will hold water better and you can put something quite large in them.

senua · 07/10/2024 10:53

or any other suggestions greatly received.
Disguise the view with something nice indoors on the windowsill. Or put a shelf above and have a trailing plant. Might make the room dark, though.

Maybe you could fix some art or similar to the wall? If mirror-like then it will have the double-effect of reflecting more light into the room. If you are really clever you could get one of those mirrored faux windows and have it angled so that you can see bits of existing greenery in the garden. Or have it more square-on, reflecting some plants growing up your wall (instead of the neighbour's).

Mittens67 · 07/10/2024 11:07

You can’t do anything to or grow anything up the wall as it is not yours.
I would get a long planter trough made to size required and attach trellis behind it for climbers. Clematis montana seems to grow anywhere ime and is vigorous so I would have this and a jasmine officinale which is also fast growing. Then you can choose some smaller hardy perennials to fill the gaps in front of them.
You could have the planter made with wheels in case your neighbour ever needs access to their wall.

halava · 07/10/2024 11:14

It looks like a shared alley, so you'd need to watch out that any pots etc. don't impede access, or moving bins, delivery of big things etc.

If it were me, I think I'd buy one of those privacy screens (moveable), and get stencils of nice things like leaves and flowers and paint them lovely bright colours. As pp said, add in fairy lights too. I wouldn't bother with plants TBH for the above reason, but that's not to say they wouldn't look good either!

Attelina · 07/10/2024 11:18

I'd leave it and just get some attractive privacy film for your window instead.

Edited

The idea of a planter on wheels is a good one. But not clematis montana...that would be far too vigourous for a planter.

But a small tree in it like a standard kojo-no-mai or a standard apple or cherry. I've had a kojo no mai in a pot for years, lovely iin sprig and autumn. Put some alliums in too and some verbena bonaseries to give some height.
