What conditions do tulbaghias thrive best in?

Apart from aeoniums (another thread) I also love tulbaghias (society garlic) and have several varieties in terracotta pots. Being like mini agapanthus I supposed that they enjoy similar conditions, but while plant shopping the other day I spotted tulbaghias in the pond marginals section! Mine have been doing okay in free draining gritty compost in pots, but have I been doing it all wrong? Google has not helped. Tulbaghia are sold as pond marginals, but other sources claim that they like dry sun Confused

I grew them successfully in a Mediterranean climate without irrigation, up to 5 months without rain and hardly any soil!

Would be delighted to find out that they can thrive in swamp like conditions, as that's what my current garden looks like for much of the year...

You've been doing it just fine! They like a sheltered, sunny spot with light free-draining soil - at the Royal Botanic Gardens here in Edinburgh they grow in the alpine/rock garden area in gravel. If it's a very cold winter they may need protection though, especially the variegated form.

Thank you both - @CatherinedeBourgh I witnessed tulbaghias growing in water at the garden centre so (bizarrely?!) it may just be the perfect climate change plant!
