Newly planted last spring, what do I need to do with these new plants for over the winter? Do I prune, dead head? Cut back? Any help gratefully received from a novice gardener.

I think one is an aster, the other a verbena but what is the third?

Usually I leave well alone as they can continue flowering until the really bad weather starts, and it helps the wildlife if allowed to hibernate amongst the dead leaves. But i do put a good handful of mulch around the base. Some survive, some don't depending on how bad it snows😬

The third is a ceanothus I believe

The ceanothus should be fine, but given it’s so young if you get a very hard frost predicted it might be worth protecting it with something light. But it should be fine. Aster and verbena are both perennials, so they will die back and regrow next year. Ceonothus is a small tree so nothing should change with it.

The ceanothus is a hardy shrub, do not prune at this time of year as you will prune off next years flowers.
From the small glossy leaves, I should say it’s the evergreen variety.
As said both the others will die down and pop up next year. I dead head my aster and it prolongs the flowering season.
