What have you done in the garden today? What went well? What surprises have you had? What could have gone better?

those little hyacinth-like ones with the Polish sounding name beginning with P. Puschkinia?

That's the chap! Thanks.

Well the torrential rain & thunderstorms we were predicted haven't materialised yet, so I've been out in the front garden patching the lawn.
Also found some spare spring bulbs & chucked them all in a pot which hopefully will grow.
Now just hoping the rain that's meant to be happening over the next few days does so it waters the grass seed for me!

It's chucking it over here! Full on downpour

No rain here either, DH moved our awning over a bit and got some polycarbonate sheeting to protect his nerdy railway stuff over winter.
It's half completed but will be nice when it's finished.
He got a trellis to train the vine up, which is another step towards my long term plan to train the vine across the awning and frame my summer view of the garden with bunches of hanging grapes.
I like it when he gets my "vision" and makes it happen. I have mad schemes that take decades to work but that I can fully visualise at the start.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 21/09/2024 17:00

Downpours and sunshine here after yesterday’s thunderstorms.
I’m glad I wrapped up the garden chairs yesterday for the winter and emptied the tomatoes, cucumber and cucamelon plants ( the latter did absolutely nothing other than grow about 12’” up the canes) into the compost bin.
I still have some spring bulbs to plant.

BestIsWest · 21/09/2024 19:00

I’m still waiting impatiently for an order of bulbs I placed last month. I have some more in the shed plus some plants I want to go in at the same time and I can see the decent weather slipping away.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 21/09/2024 19:19

My DH got me a big pot of flowers from Asda called 'garden mum' I'm assuming it's shorthand for chrysanthemum?
It's huge and I have no idea what to do with it. Plant it outside or leave it in a pot? It's full of tiny purplish flowers

Porridgeislife · 21/09/2024 19:25

Did the autumn feed of the lawn as we’re getting 40mm of rain in the next 2 days.

Picked up a couple of hundred of crab apples!

Hedjwitch · 21/09/2024 19:54

Cosmos are finally flowering! Its nearly October!

Had a bonfire...sshhh,don't tell the folks on the anti bonfire thread

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/09/2024 20:27

@Rosemaryandlavender1 Yes, Chrysanthemum

Emptied 2 hanging baskets ... potted up 4 fuschias and 1 geranium. Just another 7 hanging baskets to go!

IDareSay · 22/09/2024 10:28

Didn’t do anything in the garden today apart from watering but did go to the garden centre and bought two small trees to be delivered on Monday. Need to go back today for pots and compost so we are ready to pot them on when they arrive.

Weeding,cutting back,planting bulbs

ErrolTheDragon · 22/09/2024 17:07

One of those weekends when it was nice on Saturday so we were out all day, then out earlier today and by the time I'd done some necessary chores it was getting a bit late to go to one of the big garden centres to browse bulbs. So I thought I'd check if the lovely plant nursery at the local FE college was open on Sundays only to discover it closed down at the end of august. I'd planned on going there a lot during my impending retirement, so this is quite a blow.Sad

So, I donned my gardening clothes and headed out into the drizzle for some rather morose deadheading and clearing of the barrel ponds. One gets a lot of the normal green algae, the other generally has far less - but this year developed lots of that greyish bubbly stuff that looks like some sort of spawn. They're right next to each other and contain similar plants so I've no idea why they have these different growths.
And then I noticed the jasmine throttling one of my standard roses and generally drooping over the border. A trim turned into cutting the whole damned thing back. I've decided I want to try to eradicate it - of course it's suckered so won't be easy - because although I tried to train it nicely along the wires I installed this spring, I just can't reach the fence in the summer without trampling something, and any jasmine flowers are too far back to smell so it's far more trouble than it's worth.

And there's another on the back fence Hmm

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/09/2024 17:12

Rebuilt the roof of the wood store. Still needs shingling, but the structure's done.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/09/2024 17:12

And moved the xmas potatoes into the greenhouse and set up their watering system.

menopausalmare · 22/09/2024 17:17

I went a bit nuts buying bulbs online from Thompson and Morgan and have planted bulbs until I got my annual blister. I chucked a few in pots to spare my blister and will put the rest in next weekend.

ReadWithScepticism · 22/09/2024 19:50

I wish there was some instant reward for planting bulbs. It doesn't seem fair that you can scrabble about in the dirt with such care and be rewarded with .... nothing, ... for six months nothing😡. Couldn't the soil at least look a bit grateful?

ErrolTheDragon · 22/09/2024 19:56

The reward is hope, the promise of spring. You could put some violas on top for now though.

daisychain01 · 22/09/2024 20:56

This weekend ended up being less horrendous weather wise than they'd forecast. I think tomorrow is going to be Armageddon.

yesterday was incredibly warm and muggy, with a few rumbles of thunder. I managed to prune the herb garden (bay tree, very woody rosemary, lavender, marjoram and mint.). At least I feel that the weekend wasn't a complete write-off.

I've brought in the majority of the tomatoes, basil and chard from the greenhouse, so depending on how next weekend's weather is I may pull everything out, Jeyes fluid all the surfaces down and tidy up for the winter Sad

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 22/09/2024 21:01

I darent go plant my bulbs because my elderly neighbour waits for me to come out of the house and do some gardening in the front to pounce on me and tell me all about his catheter. 😬

I'm really jealous of every one planting bulbs because every spring I just wish I could see something come up but he is like a ninja waiting to strike.

My established peonies are holding the fort.

InMySpareTime · 22/09/2024 21:08

@Jimmyneutronsforehead can't you wear headphones while you front garden? They don't have to be playing anything (or even plugged in) but are a good visual signal that you don't want to chat.

APurpleSquirrel · 22/09/2024 21:18

Did nothing in the garden today as it's been raining most of the day - very happy for my grass seed I sowed yesterday though.

Compared with everything else in gardening, bulbs give a quick and reliable reward. Try growing Acers from seed.

Or try early in the morning. If he’s got a catheter, it’ll take a while for him to get going. Especially if you can choose the day of the weekly bag change.
