Which roses have you had the best luck with?

In terms of potted roses, Is there any suppliers that you think are the best and which would you buy again? I am aware of David Austen roses which seem to be quite popular. I am looking to purchase two mature rose plants to plant in pots as I'm too worried to put them in the ground. If anyone has pictures of their roses in pots then please do share 😊

I have my eye on Gertrude Jekyll and I think it is called Gabriel's oak, both from David Austen.

Gertrude Jekyll can become quite huge. Gabriel Oak would be a nice choice. Olivia Rose Austin is a really a solid performer, for another pink option. If you like white, Desdemona is amazing.

Thank you, I will look into your other recommendations. Do they bloom in the first year? It's a shame they don't have reviews under the roses on their website, as I always find them to be quite helpful.

Why are you too worried to put them in the ground? They would probably be happier than in pots.

There’s a section on the David Austen website showing which ones are better suited to pots.

I have Desdemona (white with a pink tinge) which is very pretty.

Babychewtoy · 07/09/2024 20:55

And yes they flower in the first year from David Austen. If you live anywhere near Shropshire I highly recommend a visit to the David Austen rose garden. You can see them all planted and choose your favourite. And there’s a nice cafe.

DollopOfFun · 07/09/2024 21:03

All of my roses are potted, and all going strong 5-6 years on.

From David Austen, I love my Gabriel Oak and Generous Gardener. Sceptre'd Isle also looks lovely, but I don't love the scent of that one.

My absolute favourite though, is an unknown named yellow rose that I got for about 99p from the intensive care table at B&Q! The scent and blooms are divine.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 07/09/2024 21:04

@Babychewtoy I am quite new to gardening and I'm not sure about things like what sort of soil I have and which parts of the garden is best suited for growing roses. I was thinking to try in a pot the first year and then plant once I am more confident where it will do better.

I don't live near there but may visit next summer if I get the chance to!

@DollopOfFun that's good to hear. Please may i ask what size pots did you plant them in?

This does seem to be the most popular one.

From vague memory, I'd say 25 to 30 litre pots.

KirstenBlest · 07/09/2024 21:20

Cheap plants from the supermarket. Far more blooms than the DA in my garden.
Had a neighbour ask for cuttings from one that IIRC came from Poundland.

cortex10 · 07/09/2024 21:22

I'm very pleased with Molineux (golden yellow), William & Catherine (white with a hint of pink) and Princess Anne (pink) from David Austin (all growing well in patio pots with a bit of TLC). Definitely recommend a visit to the nursery at Albrighton.

KirstenBlest · 07/09/2024 21:25

I'd love lots of David Austen roses.

MrsApplepants · 07/09/2024 21:31

I have 26 rose plants in my garden including several David Austin. I don’t think they are any better performing than non branded roses you get from a garden centre. Unless a specific patio rose they will do better in the ground than in a pot. Roses aren’t that fussy about soil either - just dig in some well rotted manure and you’re good to go.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 07/09/2024 21:44

@MrsApplepants wow! Your garden with all the roses must look magnificent. I must pay a visit to my local garden centre before I purchase but I definitely have my eye on the Gertrude Jekyll

I only buy ones with a nice scent. I have St Ethelburga and Desdemona which are nice. I'm getting Gabriel Oak next.

In the advice given, no-one has asked you whereabouts you live in the UK, which direction your garden faces, what type of soil you have, what your weather conditions tend towards. Without that information the advice you are getting is without value. What grows well in, say, Kent, doesn’t do well in my soggy area.

Please don’t spend a fortune with David Austen and the like until you’ve done some more research into what grows in your conditions. I would suggest you find a local nursery. By that I mean a proper nursery – if they sell chichi housewares and have a café they probably aren’t a proper nursery. A local place will be able to advise you much better.Ignore everything you have heard here.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 07/09/2024 22:41

@ForPearlViper I like in the East Midlands and as far I know I have a south facing garden which does get a good amount of sunlight. I have rosemary and lavender growing which I have never really watered or done any anything too except pruning.
I don't know much about the soil which Is why I mentioned planting the roses in pots.

OP posts:
APurpleSquirrel · 07/09/2024 22:50

Harkness Roses are also good.
If you have a south facing garden, lots of options as lots of roses love the sun.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 07/09/2024 22:51

Also I did ask what did well for other people, so I appreciate everyone who answered. I understand what works well for one garden might not necessarily for another.

APurpleSquirrel · 07/09/2024 23:08

In pots, doing well, are David Austen The Generous Gardener (climbing rose) & Harkness Bridge of Sighs (climbing rose).

Planted in the ground - David Austen - Mary Delaney; The Lady Gardener; Tottering-By-Gently; Molineux, Kew Gardens, Virginia & Eustacia Vye
Harkness - The Peacekeeper; The Simple Life; Ginger Syllabub; Garden Glory

Also have a few others from supermarkets etc doing well.

Gardendiary · 07/09/2024 23:16

I have a Gabriel Oak it’s gorgeous, but it’s massive - probably about 5ft, not ideal for a pot. In fact I have a lot of roses and it’s much easier to grow them in the ground. Pots dry out and roses need a lot of water and you have to change the soil so they have enough nutrients. Macmillan Nurse by Peter Beales could be good if you want to go down the pot route - ver floriferous. I’ve not been impressed by David Austin’s customer service recently so am loathe to recommend any of theirs.

Don’t be so ridiculous. If the rose is going in a pot it doesn’t matter what condition her garden is in. She could do it on a balcony with no garden, as long as she has a quick look at how to pot up and look after roses - and this is what was asked in the op.
