Grass sowing mistake?

Just spent ages planting grass seed today - raked the soil, scattered the seed, then covered it lightly with topsoil, and walked on it. Not sure where I got the idea of covering with topsoil, but I've just checked and apparently it's not a good idea to cover the seed with soil as it doesn't germinate so well... Has anyone done this before? What was the outcome?

Should I try to gently rake the area to expose more of the seed? Or am i better off just getting some more seed and scattering it over the top?

I always lightly cover mine - sure I saw it recommended somewhere! So long as it's only lightly you'll be fine.

I always cover mine with sifted topsoil. If I don't, the birds eat most of it before it germinates!

Ooh thanks @Pootles34 & @fortedeimarmi - that's v encouraging. I'll just leave it and see what happens!

If it is lightly covered, it is less likely to be eaten by birds before it gets the chance to germinate. I wouldn't worry about it. If there are a few patchy areas when it starts to come up, just fling some more seed in the general direction of the bald bits.

I always cover mine and think it helps. It means the seed is more likely to stay moist and less likely to be eaten by birds.
