This is to plant next Spring. The sunnier side of my small garden has lots of pink, white and purple. I want to add a bit of orange and yellow next year so it looks more colourful. I do have a red sweet william. I'm going to plant totally tangerine geum plus one yellow plant. I was thinking either Coreopsis Golden Joy or Salvia Lemon Light. Do these bloom well over a long period?

I know it's an annual, but I would suggest looking at tithonia for next year (Mexican sunflower). I bought 3 at village fete almost 'under pressure' as I was looking for something yellow, (they are orange) and it was end of fete. They have been magnificent! I will grow next year.
If you must have yellow, think about buddleia globosa....a bit unusual. Or there is another yellow buddleia (name won't come....sorry!).

i think I’d buy wallflowers. Lots of bang for your buck.

Rudbeckias seem to last quite a while in my garden.

APurpleSquirrel · 04/09/2024 22:19

Salvia's are long flowering - that yellow one is lovely!

I have some coreopsis golden joy in pots which I was given. It has been flowering since May and not showing any signs of stopping!

Turkish sage goes from late spring to autumn and is pleasingly architectural.

Is that Phlomis russeliana? Mine finished flowering a month ago, but, as you said, it’s architectural enough to leave the seed heads standing.

Porridgeislife · 07/09/2024 10:06

Probably? I know it as Turkish Sage.

Anthemis tinctoria is good- a yellow daisy flower and fine foliage, like a marguerite but hardy. You can grow from seed too which is so much cheaper if you want lots!

Yellow loosestrife has a good long flowering season and lots of yellow flowers.

MidwichCuckoo · 07/09/2024 20:40

Thank you. I'm going to look all those up

Same, they're still great now

You might like Achillea Terracotta. It can vary between orange and yellow depending on position and lasts for weeks over late summer

There’s two species called Yellow loosestrife. The one gardeners call “yellow loosestrife” is actually Dotted loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata) True Yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris) is just as showy, but a bit more relaxed looking.

The fun way to tell the difference, if you have a hand lens, is that Dotted loosestrife has glandular hairs along the edges of the petals, looking like knobs.

Then there’s also Lysimachia ciliata “Firecracker”, same yellow flowers, but dark red/purple leaves, that’s a great plant! (Loses the leaf colour in the shade, though).

If you'd like a small shrubby thing, then you could try a yellow or orange potentilla.

Our local memorial gardens have plenty of yellow helenium at the moment - it looked fantastic today mixed with pink coneflowers and purple salvia.
