Can anyone help me ID this caterpillar?

I found this randomly in the house the other day, presumably it came in on a ladder that had been outside for ages. DS made a little habitat for it and it's really enjoying the nasturtium leaves I've put in but not really touched much else? Is it safe to handle? It seems like it's doubled in size in a day!

Also it's a little more green than it looks in the photo

You should download the app inaturalist I used to have it when my son was obsessed with caterpillars!

there are a fair few hairy caterpillar species that irritate the skin if you touch the hairs so best not to handle it. Does it look like any of these? https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife/how-identify/identify-caterpillars

That's what I was thinking because he's quite fluffy! No I've been down such a rabbit hole trying to identify it on Google but no joy.

Looks like an oak moth caterpillar. But hard to tell from photo. If it is DO NOT handle it!

Cw112 · 01/09/2024 19:35

It was so tiny I couldn't get a great photo initially but it's green with a black stripe down its back and the fur is black. Head is kind of a pale orange color. Since I've put him in a jar I can't get a great photo he's hidden in the leaves

Send the photo to UK butterflies on Facebook. They are brilliant.

Just realised yours has black hair! No idea then! But I'd be carful handling it....maybe you have found a new species!

veritasverity · 01/09/2024 20:13

If you go on the 'forest research.gov.uk' you can contact them for identification.

I realise that noone is likely to care about this as much as I am but incase someone is equally involved I found my caterpillar! It's a Buff Ermine!

He's a beauty - I love caterpillars. I found a hawk moth caterpillar in my house last week and released him (I suspect he was brought in my my cat, although thankfully not harmed)

I'm just delighted I haven't encouraged my toddler to fall in love with a OPM.

Lovely Smile
I've seen a few beauts this year - the yellow a couple of days is a sycamore moth, I think the middle is an oak eggar and the other is a fuzzy bear (garden tiger moth)

Yeah, I've never seen one anything like that before - it's not exactly inconspicuous!

Love a good caterpillar id thread. This is my offering. A bed-straw hawkmoth from the French Alps. He was huge!

A couple of years ago I found two Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillars which I looked after during pupation and until they hatched in May. Followed this series on youtube Elephant hawk moth

Elephant hawk moth

Beautiful beast. Eats Rosebay and Fuchsia. The link shows him on someone’s hand - he’s the almost the size of her fingers

Dd and I went to London Zoo last week and spent ages in the Butterfly house. They have Atlas moths in there, all I can say is WOW. They are absolutely gigantic, their wings must each easily be the span of my hand
not my photo

@MereDintofPandiculation i wish some would come and eat my fuschias. They are from the old owners, I hate them and nothing kills them ! Plus I love moths and would be thrilled so see one here !
