I have two Boston ivy plants I wanted to spread along this fence. They are growing but more so down to the wall. Do I need to cut them from the supports? How do I train it up the fence? Many thanks

Those look like virginia creepers rather than boston ivy?

What I have done with my Boston ivy is to spread it out in the direction I want it to grow and secure it with blu-tack. It soon enough attaches itself and carries on growing in the direction i wanted it.

oh could be? I just asked for Boston ivy at the garden centre 🙈 Ok thank you I will try that. Do you think it needs to stay within the support canes still?

I would keep them on. I'd be pretty pissed they gave me virginia creeper rather than Boston ivy though:

Bear in mind that Parthenocissus quinquefolia is listed on Schedule 9 of the UK Wildlife & Countryside Act as an invasive non-native species. This doesn't mean you can't grow it in your garden, but it does mean you should do everything you can to ensure it doesn't spread into the wild. Virginia creeper is very fast growing and can reach heights of 20m. We encourage you to be careful to keep its growth in check and take care when disposing of clippings. While Parthenocissus quinquefolia is still widely available to buy in garden centres and nurseries, we encourage you to consider alternative options, including closely related Boston ivy and Chinese Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus henryana.

(from Gardener's world).

If the leaves are fully lobed then it's virginia creeper, Boston Ivy has leaves that don't divide all the way down.

Yes, agreed, Virginia creeper. Both of them have self adhesive suckers, which work very well on stone but I don’t know how well they work on wood.

I got rid of my Boston Ivy because I realised even cutting it down to ground level it was going to be too much hard work keeping it out of the roof slates 2.5 storeys above.

Thank you both! Yeah I’m not very impressed I was mis sold. I’ll see how it goes. Thanks again for the advice 👩‍🌾
