Growing an avocado plant

Has anyone ever successfully done this? Not for the fruit, just for the fun of it.
I’ve had my stone hovering in water for what seems like months and it’s finally split and has grown a couple of spindly roots.

They grow in my compost heap.

They’re not the most exciting of plants. They tend to grow straight upwards and it’s very hard to get them to branch.

Avocados grow from absolutely massive trees.

I think growing from an avocado stone is a bit of fun but you won't get a very useful plant or any fruit.

Growing from an orange or lemon pip would probably be a bit more fun and rewarding.

Ours is 4ft tall and healthy. It’s in the conservatory now, but will have to move it before winter. They can take over 7 years to fruit, if at all. Don’t give up on yours, and don’t let it dry out. Keep it moist but not overwatered.

Thank you everyone - yes not the most exciting of growing experiences then! I just like growing things.

I started it again 2 weeks ago - today a teeny root. Let's see how long I can sit it out this time.

Wow- don’t know where I’ll put ours if it gets that big!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/08/2024 20:25

I've got a couple of stones which so far are doing nowt.

PedantScorner · 26/08/2024 20:27

I've grown plenty but they died in the winter, They were outside.

Snooks1971 · 26/08/2024 20:39

It seems like a shame to chuck out such a lovely great big seed, I think!

There’s 3 things that don’t rot down in the compost heap - egg shells, avocado skins, and avocado stones.

LockdownGardener · 27/08/2024 09:07

Grew one over lockdown. It got to six ft. Had to put it out last winter due to space. Wrapped it in wool but the frost got it.

You've forgotten peach and cherry stones, I used to live in forlorn hope of those when I was a child. Though a friend told me his mother had grown an absolutely fabulous peach from a stone in a pile of pigshit.

PedantScorner · 27/08/2024 09:17

I have a cherry tree that is a weed. It bears fruit.

BubblePerm · 27/08/2024 09:41

I've got one that's sprouted. I'm waiting for it to be tall enough and then I'm going to chop it down to a third to get it to branch.
Apparently one can grow sweet potato plants from the bits with nobbles on and they make very pretty plants.

TonTonMacoute · 27/08/2024 17:36

Grow ginger, it's much more exciting and it becomes quite a pretty plant.

I was told that if I swallowed cherry stones I’d get a cherry tree growing from inside me. Didn’t stop me. Swallowing was less faff than spitting out and disposing of them

JaninaDuszejko · 27/08/2024 20:31

It's so much fun growing from seeds and cutting. I am getting so much pleasure from the honeysuckle cuttings I took earlier this year that have now grown into decent plants, they are going into the ground soon.

Keep meaning to grow an avocado plant just for the fun of it but might have to try ginger and lemon seeds now as well.

GuessingGownaGoGo · 27/08/2024 23:30

I did grow one once but then visited a friend who had been growing one for 10 years and it looked exactly the same as mine but a few feet taller.

I got rid of mine after that. I was just so bored at the thought of it.

LoveRosesClimbing · 27/08/2024 23:33

What do you do with the ginger? Stick it in a pot with compost or leave it in water?

GuessingGownaGoGo · 27/08/2024 23:37

Ooo I have grown ginger for the first time this year and it worked!

I put the tuber in damp compost back in April and kept it by the window in a warm and sunny part of the shed. It took 2 months to make shoots but now it's made loads and I'm hoping for a big haul of ginger in a couple of months

My mum has an avocado plant, it's stays indoors In a sunny room. Lots of big leaves and pretty tall.
I like growing dates seeds, so pretty.
Star fruit also has lovely dainty leaves but never seen any in UK stores.
