Lawn thats not a lawn

The house we are moving into has a lawn I say lawn but a more accurate description is patch of weeds with some grass. It is also very lumpy.

I havent had a garden before so very much a novice. Is this something I can try to fix myself, do I need to get someone in or am I best off getting the whole thing re turfed?

If the lumps are lumps of solid earth and you are new to gardening then it sounds like returfing would be a sensible option. If the lumps are loose eg fresh ants nests, clumps of grass then consistent mowing and a dose of weed and feed before the next bout of rain might do the trick. W need a photo.

Yes you can do it yourself. If you pay someone it will be quicker but cost a lot more.

This is from Rightmove as we haven't moved in yet and doesnt really show the extent of the problem as the property has been empty for a long time now.

I suppose we could give it a go before re turfing because we can't really make it worse. Is this a winter or summer job? We hope to be in by late Autumn.

You can renovate that no problem. It will take a while, and the only expense will be some grass seed, a spring tine rake, a garden fork and plenty of elbow grease. And a lawnmower, obviously!

Google 'how to renovate a lawn' and there's plenty of advice online.

Just mow it regularly and it will neaten up. Anything else would be a lot of work when you are moving house. I also am not a fan of the manicured monoculture lawn look, it’s much nicer to have a bit of variety.
