Wisteria wildly winding worry!

We've got a large boundary hedge between us and the field next door, roughly 8ft high and 20ft long. It's mostly made up of that very sharp thorny plant commonly used for hedging and a few brambles and elderberry.
Birds nest in it in spring.

A white wisteria has grown over from the field and is totally covering around half of the hedge. This summer it has gone completely mad and unstoppable and no doubt will carry on growing!

I'm worried that it will kill off the hedge, mainly because birds nest in it in spring. I believe that the seeds are poisonous.

How can we get rid of it?

Are you sure it's a wisteria? Could you post a picture, as it's behaviour (and the fact it's coming from a field) doesn't sound very wisteria-ey!

alreadyinuse100 · 15/08/2024 16:06

I agree with Pinkywoo. I'm already thinking it might be Russian Vine.

BetteDavisChin · 15/08/2024 17:36

Thanks both for replying. I've attached three pics showing 1. How it's covering the hedge 2. A close up 3. The height it's reached from the next door field.

Am a looking at the wrong photos? I can't see a wisteria there.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/08/2024 17:39

One of the photos looks like a Deutzia, but I might be wrong.

BetteDavisChin · 15/08/2024 17:44

@alreadyinuse100 I think you may be right: Russian Vine.
I've just looked up the entry on Wikipedia and it does look the same.

Not a wisteria. It's a plant I know as "mile a minute". Not sure of the official name.

It goes rampant and is quite difficult to get rid of.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/08/2024 17:45

That first picture is "Russian Vine", aka "mile a minute". Grows as described.

Second photo is something different - deutzia, as previously mentioned. Non invasive and pretty shrubs, can be pruned to size and shape.

BetteDavisChin · 15/08/2024 17:46

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat my neighbour across the road told me it's wisteria. She always is knowledgeable about plants - perhaps not!

BetteDavisChin · 15/08/2024 17:48

@FuzzyPuffling so you say there are two completely different plants?

Russian vine has cream coloured, very small individual flowers.
The other photo, the flowers look larger and very white.

Sorry, OP, I didn’t mean to to be rude. Apologies if it came across this way. I do like a good plant mystery.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/08/2024 18:00

Keep the deutzia. Bees adore it.

BetteDavisChin · 15/08/2024 18:06

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat not at all rude!

I so much appreciate everyone's input here. I knew I could rely on Mumsnet's Gardeners 🌸

Ew. Horrible stuff. I wish they would ban the sale of it altogether. It is definitely Russian Vine, and it is related to Japanese Knotweed, which is why it grows so fast and is so hard to get rid of.

Second photo is a close-up of Russian Vine flowers. You can see the trigonal “nutlets” typical of the dock family, Polygonaceae, of which Russian Vine is a member - particularly if you look in the area of that red stem to the right of the picture.
