A beautiful tree that will grow well in a pot.

I was given some of my late Dad's ashes and really didn't know what to do with them, so they have languished in a drawer for the past year and a bit.

I'd like to plant a tree and scatter his ashes when doing so but as we rent I'd rather do this in a pot so I can take it with me if we buy somewhere eventually.

Any suggestions?
Garden is windy and only has the sun until around 3pm.
North of Scotland so lots of rain.

It might in parts of the U.K. but not sure it would in the OPs windy north of Scotland?

I have an olive tree that has thrived on my terrace. Am south east but get a lot of wind and there is no shelter from it.

I'm definitely leaning towards an Acer, one of the yellow ones as that was his favourite colour.
I like the idea of an olive tree but seeing as he hated olives I probably shouldn't 😊

Japanese acers prefer acid soil but you could adjust that with your growing medium. Ashes would be alkaline (I guess) but you say you only have a small amount.
Everybody's going to hate me for this but I am so bored with acers being the stock answer to everything. I'm being particularly unfair because I have some marvellous ones in my garden, some 60 years old. But I don't love them any more. They're everywhere and they've become so ubiquitous that they no longer have any impact as nice specimens. Also so many of them are red-leaved and too much red foliage really kills gardens. Having said that, I'm not about to chainsaw mine and put them on the bonfire.
Fuji cherry is a good call. Lovely long-lasting flowers, fabulous autumn colour, and, although deciduous, has a nice intricate silhouette.
I have dwarf Scots pine in old Chinese dragon pots. It's Pinus sylvestris Watereri. Thrilled with it.

A standard rose would be lovely too. David Austin has some nice ones.

I have that magnolia. It's the best of the yellows and really beautiful. Flowers from a young age.
