Fig tree help needed

I just don’t know what to do with my fig tree. It’s been in a terrible state this year. It’s about 4 years old, in large pot on a west facing patio. It’s been glorious and doing well till this year.

when the first leaves came through they became brown and had some kind of fungus I think. I removed and disposed of those leaves. They new leaves don’t seem to be diseased but turned yellow and felled off.

My question is should I just plant it in the garden? Everything I’ve read says to try to restrict the roots. Does anyone have a planted fig tree that doing well and hasn’t had its roots restricted?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Ours is also turning yellow, I was thinking it must be the weather this year, inconsistent water amounts? Does yours have any leaves left at all?

Mine suddenly lost all of its leaves apart from one yesterday. No idea why!

I've got two figs. One is 40 years old on a west wall, and the other's on an east wall in a different part of the garden. Both get a lot of weather -I'm in Scotland. I didn't bother restricting the roots but I don't feed them either. Both carry lots of figs, though the wasps often get them first. They are 'Brown Turkey', which is the commonest and most reliable in this country. Just plant them. I don't think I'd bother restricting the roots unless your soil is wonderfully fertile. You could sling some stones and a bit of gravel in the hole, but I don't think it's necessary.

Thanks for the replies. @TheSweetestHalleluja there are no leaves at all but some branches have green buds.

I think I’ll plant it in the garden later in the year. I’m not too bothered about its fig yield, I just love the leaves and the smell.

Im in the SE and I was wondering if it’s just been too wet this year. I’m going to replace some
of the soil in it’s pot and take it
from there.

There have been soooo many diseases around this year. Loads of my plants have had leaf browning ailments. I am just hoping for better next year.

My fig tree has been decimated by caterpillars but it is still much happier in the ground than it was in a pot - and I haven't restricted the roots.

I have two trees which reliably give me c 200 figs a year. They’ve both got a box of paving slabs around their roots but after 20 years I imagine they’ve broken through those. (Second tree was an insurance cutting when we moved the first tree to convert our porch). I’ve never got a potted fig to fruit.
