Should I be worried about my oak trees?

Hi guys, I'm in Ireland and we've had an unusually wet summer. I have a few oak trees at the front of the house and in the last week the leaves have been changing colour. I'm not sure if they are just prematurely losing their leaves because of the weather or if it might be something more sinister.

The oaks are about 20 years old and the ground underneath them is poor. There are oaks on the side of the house too, on a boundary with a field, and they are healthy looking with a full green canopy of leaves.

Can you let us have a picture of the whole thing? That looks more like new growth

This is one of the oaks I'm.worried about.

This is new growth on a healthy looking tree on the other side of the house. It's a brighter green than the old growth.

I had swifts nesting on the house but they seem to have flown away in the last few days, which seems early as well. There are definitely less insects around the house. I have a buddleia and cotoneaster that would usually be covered in butterflies and bees but the garden is weirdly silent.

Same species of oak? Getting more sun?

Yamadori · 05/08/2024 21:15

No, I wouldn't have thought it is anything to be concerned about, and oaks do sometimes get a pinkish tinge either on new leaves, or when they first start to get autumn colours.

The one on the other side of the house will be in a different microclimate anyway, and my gut is telling me it is not the exact same variety. Trees of the same species can vary quite a bit in habit and leaf shape.

That's reassuring. I think they are the same variety, but the ones at the front would have a different microclimate as they are protected from the wind by the house and the ground under them gets waterlogged.
The ones at the side get more sun and wind and the ground drains much better.
I'm a bit paranoid as we were badly hit by ash die-back around here and I'd hate to lose more trees.

The main thing to worry about with oaks is the Oak Processionary Moth, and that is rare in Ireland so far. I just had a Google and they found some infestations in Dublin last year.
