Something to go next to these clematis

I'm watering these for a neighbour who has supported me when I was ill etc. There's a few pots where I could put something in now just to say thank you (I'm definitely clearing it with them first, though!). It would be good if they were late flowering, obviously.

The aspect is direct full sun.

I had a look around a local nursery but everything was a bit bright. The house is classic and traditional so I feel that should be the look, probably.

There's these clematis, some lavender and a white-ish rose and also some dark agapanthus in bloom now off to one side.

The pot sizes are flexible but there is one main round pot that is probably a focal point and a small hanging pot off some railings that is less important. I have some spare terracotta pots both tall and other sizes.

I was thinking dwarf white Japanese anemone but then felt that might be too much white (white against white). Maybe a pale pink David Austin rose in a pot?

Geranium (cranesbill) in pale pink was another thought for a smaller pot, though not that exciting.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for any help or thoughts 🙏

A pot with Wild Swan Japanese anemone and the little, but lovely, Elkie Cranesbill Geranium would look lovely and come up year after year.

We grow ours through bright orange climbing roses. The contrast is beautiful.

Although the contrast with orange sounds interesting, it wouldn't work here but thanks.

Thanks for the tip about the Elkie cranesbill geranium. That could work. Alternatively, I had looked at a cranesbill available at a supermarket which I put into a collage of other options, including salvia and an Emily Brontë David Austin rose, but wasn't sure if the colours gelled or not:

David Austin also suggested their rose "Elizabeth", I'm not sure if anyone has that? But the photos I've found of it have been inconsistent and one review says it's larger than expected:

The salvia and Dianthus might not last so this only gives an optimistic idea 😅

This is with Elizabeth and the post above is with Emily Brontë.

Roses don't really like being in pots very much. There are some which will put up with it but they are much happier in the ground

amoreoamicizia · 18/07/2024 11:24

Does anyone have any opinions on the colours?

They are lovely. I really like the pinks. Think it goes very well with the two clematis
