Recommend me a colour for our fence

We’re replacing a fence. 6ft along the side and back of our house. Victorian semi. Won’t be seen from the street as we have a hedge on the outside.

Replaced the windows with anthracite grey & thinking of painting the fence a similar colour. Thoughts?

Also, please recommend a brand. I’m thinking everyone’s ‘go-to’ is Ronseal?

Thank you in advance.

I have a very dark brown in my downstairs loo - it looks fabulous and I can see how it would look great with greenery. I suppose if I were to express a strong opinion I steer clear of light green if you are going to put plants against it. The contrast of a coloured fence can look amazing and one other thing to consider - my neighbours kindly built a wall between us - they chose beautiful bricks - but the tones are all wrong for my hydrangea flowers - which are a cool pink - the wall is warm terracotta shade, they fight each other and it's something I'll have to be mindful of when placing plants.
Depends how fussy you are about these kinds of things. But looking across the top of the wall - there are colours that work with their wall and colours that really don't - their buddleia looks totally out of place.

We used Cuprinol Garden Shades in Seasoned Oak. Our garden is full of palms and ferns and it looks great with the bright green plants!

Dark green. It will blend in.
Not grey. It's depressing.

If you want grey - you could go for a warm grey with green tones - have a look at Pompeian Ash by Little Greene - it's a great shade of green/grey. I'd colour-test any grey or green you plan to use - the light can alter the shade quite dramatically.

Hello
It's not a fence but we have a summer house that we inherited from the old owners that was painted a Anthracite grey. It looked quite dull and dreary and we have just repainted it cuprinol willow on the outside and white on the inside
Il try and attach pictures of before and after to give you an idea of grey vs willow (sage)

I did grey a few years back and although it looked smart and modern, I regretted it in winter.

If you have a lot of evergreen in your garden or other bright features, it might be OK but otherwise I wouldn't

Now trying to sand that off and go with a sage green ....

This is the before in grey
Excuse the broken window, it cracked during one of the winter storms

I bought my house a few months ago and I inherited a dark grey shed and brown fences.

Today I finally started to paint the shed sage green today and it is such a relief even with only just the first, uneven coat not to be looking at that ugly, gloomy grey block anymore.

I also got a matching shade of green but slightly lighter to do the fences next.

The grey was really starting to depress me. A lighter shed is making everything look much more cheerful.

Can i make a plea for you to paint an inconspicuous area first, to check if the paint is seeping through to the neighbours side?

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 18/07/2024 18:22

And this is the after in a willow sage
Windows still need a clean after the painting 😂
Hope that helps with deciding between a grey and sage against a green leafy backdrop

I don't want to post a picture of the full garden but the sage willow definitely is a much happier improvement to the previous dull grey.
Dare I say it has transformed the overall look of the garden

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 18/07/2024 18:34

@maldivemoment sorry forgot to tag you in the pictures above of the grey and sage

maldivemoment · 18/07/2024 21:07

Wow! Enormously helpful @Rosemaryandlavender1. I really appreciate that. Thank you.
Your summerhouse looks awesome!

Oh that’s lovely!

Here's a snapshot of my stained black fence with greenery against it. I love the contrast.

I think a very dark fence is a good background to the garden, but that summerhouse is beautiful in the light colour as it's in front and a feature.

Argh…I’m so torn!

The black does look lovely too
I prefer black over grey

@maldivemoment is it possible to get some tester pots and paint one or two panels to get an idea before doing the whole fence?

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 19/07/2024 20:55

We need to do the fence in our front garden. My DH was thinking of a dark brown but I'm more inclined towards a neutral lighter colour

I found this cuprinol shade on amazon with a picture someone put up

My neighbour has a grey fence (battleship grey it looks like); when teamed with the half astroturf, half patio & no plants it's very reminiscent of a prison recreation yard....

We put up a picket fence and H (now XH!) and I argued over what colour to paint it. He wanted grey so he painted it grey…it made me feel like we were living in a prison camp! I painted it forest green last summer. I love it. It blends with the greenery around it and looks lovely.

Lovemybunnies · 19/07/2024 21:06

I hate my neighbour’s grey fence. Ours is Wild Thyme which I like but is such a hassle to redo/ touch up every year. I’m going for a colourless stain next time.

Notthatcatagain · 20/07/2024 00:30

Our shed is done with the cuprinol garden shades, very pretty pale green, it looked fabulous when it was new but went shabby very quickly, it's very expensive too and if you want to re paint it has to be sanded. The fence is just plain Ronseal fence stain in Tudor Black, it looks lovely against the plants and has lasted ok, the wet spring has left some of it very green, giving it a bit of a scrub is definitely on the list
