Accessing deep beds - new gardener alert!

Sorry feel this should be obvious. I'm planting deep beds (2-3m deep) with loads of plants of varied texture and height, filling in gaps in the soil - but I'm wondering, with no gaps how do I access the plants beyond arm's length when they need tending to. I don't want to spoil the effect with a pathway.

How will I access to dig out plants that aren't happy, need removing, need reducing etc.

Tiptoe among them. Many big gardens leave a foot or so at the back (if it’s a border against a hedge or wall) for access.

My borders aren't that deep but pretty full - but there's usually some gaps at soil level, eg at this time of year where the spring bulbs have died back.

I have seen gardeners use a small temporary plank to spread their weight in crowded flowerbeds so as not to damage the soil.

You could put down stepping stones among the plants (slices of felled tree trunks or similar).
