I expect the apps will get better, some will doubtless be developed which have more accurately labelled, specialised training data which uses location and seasonal data.

They will, but there are still things that you can’t pick up in a photo without already knowing it needs to be shown, for example with violets the shape of the sepals and the colour of the spur at the back of the flower are important

True - I guess we may have to get better at taking photos too! (Which may not be feasible if it's a plant in someone else's garden of courseGrin)

I think it's not so much luck, as doing your research and going to a decent indie nursery rather than Dobbies et al. But I was being a bit provocative - I work in a plant nursery. I don't have an hort qualifications, so I'm not an expert in that sense, but I am certainly more accurate than a plant identifying app.

Also more accurate than me, and I'm sat in my garden looking at one.

Google Image search does a pretty good job too, for free.

I completely agree about the inability to sense check! Sometimes searches have come back with ridiculous suggestions... but that's because I know they're ridiculous.
