What to do with this plant?

I’ve neglected had this plant for a few years and it’s got a bit spindly and spread out a lot. It takes up a lot of space with its spread.

What would you do with it? Trim it? Cut it back hard? Leave it be?

What kind of plant is it? Is there supposed to be a picture?

PlantMumsy · 06/07/2024 20:11

Yep! Forgot the pic

It's a monstera. Really, it needs a pole to climb and you can tie it on (use plant friendly Velcro) but don't tie the leaves, only the main stem. That will encourage it to grow upwards, rather than out.

PlantMumsy · 06/07/2024 20:41

After putting in a pole, Would you trim the spready bits ?

I think it needs more light. It should have spliis and holes in its leaves.

You can trim the bottom leaves if you like. I wouldn't cut it back. The bit that's sticking out (with the split leaf) could be attached to the pole and it should have less spread but they do get very big!

I'd agree with the previous poster. The leaves are likely remaining small and have no fenestrations due to lack of light.

Thanks so much for the advice. It’s been tucked away in quite a gloomy room so no wonder. Will get one of those things linked above and stick it somewhere sunny!

It won’t want full sun. Somewhere bright but no sun

PlantMumsy · 07/07/2024 21:21

Noted thanks.

Support stick should arrive tomorrow

Hello PlantMumsy,

You will find plants with large dark green leaves such as your monstera or outdoor plants such as Fatsia japonica growing in a shady aspect. Such plants cope with lower light levels as they have a bigger surface area which to absorb lower light levels.

Happy gardening
