I want to create a sanctuary garden

My garden is south facing, but I am in Scotland so we get a lot of rain. I don’t have a lot of money, I’m not into anything modern looking and I don’t know much about plants at all. I want to fill out the boarders of my garden with loads and loads of plants, I need privacy along the back as anyone walking by looks in. Maybe a climbing plant or bush? Although I don’t know anything about them. I want a pond, but I would need to apply for planning permission. I’m not sure about where would be the best place to put it but I want it at the end in the corner. I need advice on where to order rocks online for it. and I also want a tree.

My garden is sanctuary-like: a wildlife pond in a back corner, then next to it I've built a shelter - big enough for two chairs, with the sides all open. Have rambling roses and wisteria growing over the shelter to make sides and cover the ugle plastic roof. How big a pond do you want if it needs planning permission?? Maybe the law's different in Scotland (I'm in England) but I just bought some pond liner and started digging 😆

Oh I’m in a council house and they want me to pay to apply for planning permission to build one. I don’t want anything particularly big just a small one

Even in Scotland you shouldn't need planning permission for a small pond. Worth talking to your planning department and trying to get a written statement from them that planning permission is not required. Don't expect one section of the Council to have a clue about another section of the Council.

You could make a pond in an old container above ground. That won't need planning and would still attract lots of wildlife.

We have a small lilac tree but there are loads that would be suitable. Do you want evergreen or deciduous? Blossom? Climbers grow quickly eg clematis, jasmine or honeysuckle and you often get these really cheap in supermarkets.

Things that self seed would work well and fill up borders quickly.

Shrubs - I love choisia as it grows well and has lovely flowers and is evergreen. Eponymous are cheap and a good choice too.

Have a look jn your neighbourhood to see what works well and then just give it a try.

Hello 182blink,

Have a look at Geoff Hamilton’s Paradise Gardens for some ideas on creating an earthly paradise / sanctuary garden also on DVD.

Both the following are awesome watching to unwind to at the end of the day.
