Standard rose bush

Hi all my partner brought me 2 standard rose bushes in April in memory of my late nan and when they arrived they were twigs, kind of reminded me of a snowman arms lol. We planted them in some lovely big pots and brought rose bush feed etc. The bottom of the stem turned green 2 weeks ago but other than that there's nothing on them at all. Is this normal? Sorry for sounding stupid but I've never had rose bushes from twigs before so I'm unsure what to look for or how long they take to start growing buds. Thanks

Sorry that looks dead I’d get back to the shop and get a replacement 💐

They look absolutely dead.

The term for roses like this is bare root, and April is a bit late for bare root to be in perfect condition. Do you happen to know where your DP bought them from? A reputable supplier ought to refund - but TBH a lot of suppliers wouldn't still be sending bare root out by April, as they dry out so easily and suffer once they're coming out of dormancy.

Oh no. He had them from a gardening place online I'm unsure which one though. He has brought flowers, seeds and gardening supplies from there before with no issues so he thought these would be ok. When he first opened them we were shocked to see they were like that but as we've never jad rose bushes we assumed they'd grow but the only change we've seen is the stem is turning green but other than that nothing. I've used rose feed, watered, put in sun and nothing is changing unfortunately so I did have a feeling they were dead but wanted to check on here where more professional gardeners can give advice.

Oh, that's rotten! Especially when they were a special purchase.

I think you should absolutely ask for your money back.

FWIW bare root roses can look like twigs - but usually, you get them delivered from November-March, and they usually arrive as a priority delivery, with instructions you need to soak them in water immediately.

Billybagpuss · 02/07/2024 03:54

The online suppliers I use will all happily replace when this happens.

Miracle29 · 02/07/2024 07:51

Thankyou for your replies. Yes they were a priority delivery and we did everything on the instructions. I will get dp to contact the supplier and get some new ones in a few months and try again. I did think it was strange they were taking such a long time to do anything.

I'm not a gardener at all @Miracle29 but back in November 2016 I bought my dh 2 rose plants over the internet for his birthday. Just like yours, they arrived looking like dead twigs!

He planted them anyway and kept an eye on them. In January 2017 he was really excited that the twigs were going green. The roses subsequently went on to absolutely flourish - they grew so much they broke the trellis and were frequently needing cutting back.

Sadly dh never got to see them because he died in February 2017 :(. So I take great comfort from the rose bushes - just wanted to vine you a bit of hope (since I can't give you any gardening advice!)

@Parkly I'm so sorry to hear about your husband and hope you take great comfort in the rose bushes. I'm sure he would have loved them. I'm so happy they flourished for you.

I'll keep an eye on them and see how they go and perhaps get a new one aswell.

Thank you :). And I did take great comfort - I even had a tattoo done with roses on they meant so much.

I moved house last year and got a cutting of the rose. It's not looking great - but thanks to some advice on here, it is looking better than it did!

Good luck with yours @Miracle29 - keep us posted!
