Moving house and fig tree

Our house is on the market, so no idea when we will actually move, but I really want to take a cutting from our fig tree, but from what I have read the earliest I can do that is the Autumn (we may well still be here then).

Has anyone in the UK had success with growing figs from the seeds inside a fruit?

Nothing to stop you doing cuttings even if it is the wrong time. Suggest you do air layering.

Not sure whether UK figs have viable seeds. We certainly don’t have the pollinating wasp

Have you read The Island of Trees? That’s basically the plot!

Geneticsbunny · 30/06/2024 22:54

Take cuttings now. Figs grow really easily from cuttings

Notthatcatagain · 30/06/2024 23:19

I've grown loads from cuttings, as I didn't know the right time of year to plant them, I just stuck them in and some grew. Take loads of cuttings so you can afford to lose a few

Thanks all, my late MIL brought it as a cutting from her country over 20 years ago, so am determined to try and retain some of it if I can.

This is a very well timed thread for me. I have a huge fig tree in a pot that’s 15 years old but unfortunately I’m soon to move into a flat and even if we could get it up there it would pull the balcony down 😁 I have been looking online how to take cuttings and found a clip with old Monty making it look easy!- So thanks @FutureFeelsBleak and also to @AgentProvocateur for mentioning what looks like a good read and one I’m going to try!

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/07/2024 10:20

I did air layering when we moved our tree and all of them took. So tree survived, and I planted a second one and still had three more to dispose of! Air layering probably unnecessary, but does give the cutting the benefit of the parent tree while the new roots are developing.

leeverarch · 01/07/2024 20:35

@FutureFeelsBleak If there are any low down branches you could try ground layering. If not, then it is worth taking cuttings anyway, and maybe also try an air layer.

Has anyone got figs from a fig tree grown in UK? Does that need the pollinating wasp or can it be pollinated by other insects?

FutureFeelsBleak · 01/07/2024 20:42

We get edible figs here in the UK. However I do always need to keep on top of pruning the tree, otherwise it puts its energy into growing branches

Yes loads of figs where I live, large Italian population, lots of people have them in their garden or allotments and fruit successfuly.

Firtreeandpinecones · 01/07/2024 21:25

Thanks!

The fig varieties sold for growing in England don’t need the fig moth, and are capable of producing fruit without fertilisation.

I get about 200 figs every year

Thanks @MereDintofPandiculation
