Could be beech or hazel, but the leaves look quite big.

FloofPaws · 23/06/2024 17:55

Looks a bit birch like to me, or lime

incessantpunditry · 23/06/2024 17:55

Definitely not beech. Looks like hazel to me.

Thanks, will have a google of those trees- wondering whether to dig it up and put in a pot- not a huge garden.

Looks like hazel to me too. We get them in our garden because the squirrel buries the nuts. They get absolutely massive so we pull them out asap.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 23/06/2024 18:05

It's bog-standard hazel and won't be happy in a pot.

SoupDragon · 23/06/2024 18:11

Definitely Hazel. I have loads! I think they are often "sown" by squirrels.

JeysusH · 23/06/2024 18:45

Yep, Hazel.

Unless you want a Hazel tree, dig it out!!

incessantpunditry · 23/06/2024 18:53

You can coppice hazel - ie chop it back to whatever height you want, and it won't mind.

Hazel

JollyGreenSleeves · 23/06/2024 20:17

I like the thought of having hazelnuts in the garden so might try and relocate it

If you have squirrels you won’t get nuts. They are Experts.

Best to move it in the autumn, around November. Then trim the side branches back a bit to help the roots re-establish.
