Sodding peace lily

Why do they not like me or my house? Should they not be in full sun? I've chopped off all the dead and brown leaves and given it a good soak. Am I going to be able to salvage this or should I give up?

I think peace lilies like some neglect. What’s you regime with it?

incessantpunditry · 20/06/2024 16:08

No, they don't like full sun, they are a forest floor jungle plant in the wild.

DeedlessIndeed · 20/06/2024 16:10

Keep them in shady spot. Water when the soil starts to get dry.

They dislike sun and dryness.

They do bounce back very well - don't get disheartened.

LilianaVikavanovich · 20/06/2024 16:13

I don’t think they like full sun , mine are ( though I say it myself ) spectacular

I water them once a week , from the water butt when possible , I use baby bio , wipe their leaves when they’re dusty and use a leaf spray too
when they get too big , I have divided mine and have 6 now

They don't like being overwatered either.
Put them in a dark corner, leave them until the leaves droop then dunk the pot in a tub of water till they perk up again.

TheDarkMonarch · 20/06/2024 19:16

They really hate full sun and hate heat. They need moderately lighting and moderate temps. It also helps to give them a shower every once in a while and feed them once a month or so during spring/summer.

This should have read they hate full sun and hate cold! Doh!

Phineyj · 20/06/2024 21:16

Do what @ErrolTheDragon said.

I've got a dozen or so of them all split from a farewell gift I was given in 2002!

Hopingforno2in2024 · 20/06/2024 21:24

They definitely do not like full sun. They are fab and easy plants once you have put them in the right place :)

Sunsetchaser01 · 20/06/2024 21:38

I took mine , rinsed the soil off the roots and it lives in water like cut flowers, looks great and no effort needed at all other than topping up water occasionally. Radi al but easy and works!

Yes - I had a tiny offset which I almost killed by leaving it in the porch last winter. It’s come back from being apparently dead and currently has a leaf the size of a 1p

TheDarkMonarch · 21/06/2024 09:06

I have one @MereDintofPandiculation that really begrudged being left by a window that was cracked open for most of winter (inc nights). It's slowly starting to speak to me again - but it's taken until now! Grin

garlicandsapphires · 21/06/2024 09:15

I have struggled with mine, too. Think I overwatered.
I've taken out the dead/ mouldy roots and this has perked them up a bit

LemongrassLollipop · 21/06/2024 09:25

Everyone says how easy they are but I haven't found this at all!! I bought one, all the leaves dropped off and I was down to one big one and one small one.
Miracle of miracles.... It is growing new leaves again and I watch them unfurling every few days trying not to jinx it. About 10 leaves now!!!!

I water mainly once a week sitting in a saucer of water.

Do people recommend a feed... If so what and how often?

Should I re-pot??

LilianaVikavanovich · 21/06/2024 09:47

@LemongrassLollipop i find they are very forgiving plants.
If the roots are growing out of the bottom it needs repotting ( bigger pot , more compost ) otherwise just top up the compost it’s growing in
I feed mine with baby bio ( apparently I treat my plants like they’re my pets , ie talk to them and stroke / wipe their leaves , pay them attention )

I’ve never fed mine. I don’t do houseplants, so any plants in the house have to take pot luck.

I don’t water mine as often as once a week. It’ll tell you if you’ve left it too long

LemongrassLollipop · 21/06/2024 20:28

I'll try a TLC 😁
Thanks for the tips!

redastherose · 21/06/2024 23:58

Mine is a gift and has thrived since I've tucked it in a dark corner of the kitchen out of direct sunlight and just throw some water in it around once a week or so!

AnnieSnap · 22/06/2024 00:17

I have two. One that is happy wherever it is. The other one is a real diva. I put it what should be the perfect spot. It started to fail. I tried two other position, it continued to look like it was throwing in the towel. I moved it a forth time and it has been flourishing there for about two years 🤷‍♀️
