I've recently got into indoor plants. Currently have tradescantia in two shades, velvet plants, monstera, spider plants, a prayer plant, a small lemon tree grown from pip and Chinese money plants. Looking for something new and beautiful that I can buy as a rooted cutting or small plant to nurture, ideally not too difficult, and something very pretty. Any suggestions?

I have 2 parlour palms, bought them both 15 years ago when they were tiny. They’re huge now and so healthy and beautiful.

This is one of them.

I love that you grew your lemon tree from a pip!

Lovely! I have one that's tiny, but I've already killed one off (with help from the cat!) not sure how to help this one flourish.

I love that you grew your lemon tree from a pip!

It's taken a long time and it's still tiny. When I moved house it was about 18 cm, but then died off, I had to cut it right down to the only green shoot there was. Now it has three healthy leaves, but it's taking its time!

I love a nice pony tail palm. Variegated monstera. Begonia maculata. Anything Ray! IKEA have done beauties and are reasonably priced

A fishbone cactus is a really fun, unusual houseplant. Very easy to grow and doesn't need much other than some bright light to make sure the new shoots develop the zig zag shape.

Oxalis triangularis are beautiful and can be easily grown from tiny little bulbs. I often have a few on the go to give as presents.

Devil's ivy is good to grow on a shelf to create a wall of foliage. It doesn't need a huge amount of light and grows really quickly once it's established.

I bought an umbrella plant from Lidl 3 years ago, it's grown like the clappers and is about 5'6 tall! I barely do anything to it, just a good long drink once a month or so. I've recently moved it to the bathroom and it's growing even faster there. I think it likes the damp air.

Schefflera are great, and I have some lovely ZZ plants which can stand a bit of shade if you need. I also have a clusia roses or autograph tree which is indestructible and pretty. I absolutely love my African milk tree - vicious sap but beautiful.

IKEA is your friend. Loads to look at there and cheaper than most places too

BigBundleOfFluff · 13/06/2024 22:05

Peace Lily's are also fairly indestructible- just water them when they do a dramatic flop - complete drama queens.
But I third umbrella plants. I have a 5 year old one from Sainsbury's. It's now a many headed 8ft beast. Plus I've cut one of those heads off several times so I have its children and it still hasn't stopped growing.
For something a little different I also like begonias as indoor plants - not the annuals. Begonia Rex comes in quite a few colours and is a bit different.
Take cuttings from your tradescantia- yes the grow appalling fast but I do think they look a bit ropey after a while (that could most likely just be me) and it's good to have a few on the go.
Also - warning - you do get addicted after a while - I have hundreds of houseplants now!

I have a stupid number of houseplants but at the moment my favourites are the calatheas. I love the way they fold up their leaves at night when it's time to go to bed. I have two in my bedroom, one is a lancifolia, not sure what exact type the other one is.

Alocasia, umbrella plant or monstera adansonii are my recommendation. All have interesting foliage and I've managed to keep them all alive for over 6 months so must be pretty easy-going!

Forgot to say, I do have a peace lily.

Thanks for all the suggestions, looking for them on Etsy now!

Sadly I'm nowhere near an Ikea.

Sadly I'm nowhere near an Ikea.

A significant proportion of my indoor plants come from Lidl. They are great quality for the price.

Imatorturedpoet · 14/06/2024 21:03

Thank you. I have a lidl nearby 😊

Today I ordered a dragon plant on Etsy, because I saw a beautiful one in the building where my mum lives. It's a lemon surprise one, with yellow varigation. I'm very excited!
