Corded or cordless.....that is the question.

My five and a half year old corded Flymo lawnmower has pretty much given up the ghost this afternoon, I just about got my garden cut but I don't think I want to use it again because it's turned really noisy and I think the motor is about to die.

Anyway I'm attaching a photo of my garden, it's a nightmare to use with an extension lead as I have to be so careful when manoevouring the lead around.

Any thoughts on cordless mowers? I don't want to spend a lot & I've noticed they are heavier than corded mowers, so are they more difficult to push around?
I cut my grass once a fortnight in the summer & i may well stick with corded in the end as better the devil you know.

Corded or cordless.....that is the question.

Last spring, I decided to do late-night mowing as rain was forecast the next day and mowed the power cable. I was actually quite pleased, as I'd been thinking about a battery one, so I didn't fix it. I've been so happy to have a battery one and not deal with the flex. A couple of times I've not charged the battery, but it hasn't been much of an issue and is so much faster.

@ACynicalDad yes I can empathise with your post, that's the way I'm feeling about my mower giving up the ghost, it's not a big deal I've been thinking of cordless fit a good while.

I've got a Bosch cordless. While it wasn't cheap it must be 15 years old and it's brilliant

I got one about 10 years ago from Argos for £100.

I could pick it up one handed.

It didn't propel itself but it was so light it was easy to push.

We moved to a place with a huge garden so we left it for the new tenants of our house.

I used to pop it onto the back seat of my car, and take it to the allotment to mow up when I chopped back all the comfrey, or when I had chopped a load of stuff to take to the allotment compost heap as I mowed virtually everything before composting it.

I used to use it to mow up all the leaves to make leaf mould.

If I move back to a smaller house and garden one day I'll get another that's for sure.

Definitely do not buy a petrol mower getting the b**r started is hard for non muscly people. I am 70 and find Fred's Shed a really useful source of gardening info. Fred is in a wheelchair and the products he tests I find suitable for my diminishing strength.www.fredshed.co.uk/homepage.htm. I use a bosch cordless (unless I can persuade DH or DS) to cut a similar size of lawn. The battery can also be used on a handy bosch leaf blower that is fun to use.

I've always thought cordless mowers weren't very good so it's reassuring to see this thread. My corded mower is on the way out too.

Tolkienista · 13/06/2024 17:03

@INeedAnotherName yes that was my thought too, quite surprised how many have posted positive comments on cordless mowers.
In reality it will be used between April and October every fortnight.......so I'm willing to buy one and give it a whirl.

I've gone cordless and it's wonderful. Small area that get's mowed more often now as it's much easier. I also have an area that is wildflower meadow and gets cut in September. A tough job but the cordless can even cope with that (In two goes). The cordless strimmer is great too.

We have a Bosch cordless mower and a big lawn. We are happy with it. It’s very light.

What is useful is that our other electric garden tools run on the same battery.

Our gardener said that a number of his colleagues are switching to self propelling Greenworks battery mowers.

Tolkienista · 13/06/2024 19:55

@RampantIvy yep, that's me too...... constantly shifting the power lead out of the way, because my grass area is so curved it takes forever .
I'm now almost certain to buy a cordless mower, having read all the posts.

I bought my cordless two years ago after harming my shoulder trying to start the petrol one. No regrets.

Triphazard22 · 13/06/2024 21:33

@Tolkienista have a look at Argos as they have some offers on them at the moment.

BigBundleOfFluff · 13/06/2024 22:11

I have a mountfield. It's not the most powerful thing in the world so you do need to not let your grass get too long but omg I can whizz round in 10 mins which was probably the length of time it took me to sort the cables out for the corded one before I had even started.
I'd never go corded again.

Tolkienista · 14/06/2024 14:42

@BigBundleOfFluff that's it....... I'd say it takes around 25-30 mins to cut both sides of my garden, but a good 10-15 mins avoiding cutting through the cable or moving it out of the way as I'm moving around the lawn.
I just want to be cable free now.

Join us. A corded mower feels like hard work. Cordless feels like skipping through a wildflower meadow naked but for a few of daisy chains.
